Center youth soccer playoffs underway, Island Cup games near
The dress rehearsal known as regular season is over for the Anna Maria Island Community Center fall soccer league. The playoffs got started Oct. 29 in the 11-13 and 8-10 divisions.
Smile Deep earned a 3-1 victory Oct. 28 in the 11-13 division over The Feast in a makeup game. Ava Zink led the way with two goals, while Chris Snyder added one in the victory. Joshy Calhoun scored the lone goal for The Feast in the loss.
The playoffs started for the 11-13 division with two games Oct. 29. The first game saw Sugar Beach Digital record a 5-4 victory over Jen Crady Massage that included a shoot out. Tyler Brewer scored five goals to offset four goals from Jen Crady Massage’s Alex Rodriguez in the victory.
Smile Deep recorded a 3-0 victory over The Feast in the second playoff behind two goals from Zach Fernandez and one goal from Ava Zink.
No. 1 seed Smile Deep now will take on third-seed Sugar Beach Digital in the 8-10 division for the Island Cup at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10.
Fifth-seed Tyler’s Ice Cream defeated Gulf-Bay Realty 2-1 during the 8-10 division game Oct. 29. Cailyn Connor and Marly Smith scored for Tyler’s, while Jeremiah Sculco scored the lone goal for Gulf-Bay Realty in the loss.
Tyler’s Ice Cream earned a semifinal matchup with top-seed Anna Maria Donuts Nov. 3 after press time for The Islander, while the other semifinal match pitted No. 2 seed Bowes Imaging Center against No. 3 Miller Electric. The 8-10 championship game will be at 6 p.m. Nov. 10.
AMI Fitness rolled to a 6-2 victory over Wash Family Construction during 14-17 division action Oct. 27. Tyler Pearson led the way with four goals, while Alex Butram added two goals in the victory.
Nico Calleja paced Wash Family Construction with two goals in the loss.
Adult soccer continues
As the adult soccer league at the center moves into its final weeks of the regular season, Jessie’s Island Store continues to lead the way with a perfect 6-0 record.
Eason Builders follows in the standings at 4-2, while Dojo Martial Arts at 3-2-1, Wash Family Construction at 3-3 and Slim’s Place with a 2-3-1 record are bunched in the middle. Sato Real Estate follows with a 2-4 record and Beacon Design and Island Pest Control bring up the rear with matching 1-4-1 records.
Dojo Martial Arts opened Oct. 30 action with a 5-2 victory over Sato behind three goals from Adam Bujarski and single goals from Chris Circharo and Chelsea Hoffner. Josh Bernet helped preserve the victory with 17 saves in goal for Dojo.
James Lynch and Chris Powers led Sato in the loss with a goal each, while Lynch also managed 13 saves in goal.
Eason edged Beacon Design 5-4 in the second game of the evening behind two goals each from Matt Plummer and Joey Ciasullo. Blair Schlossberg added one goal in the victory, while Chris Klotz and Scott Eason both had an assist.
Omar Polar scored two goals to lead Beacon, which also received single goals from Eric Pullen and Roman Eckert. Jordan Demers added an assist and notched 15 saves in goal during the loss.
Jessie’s remained unbeaten after edging Island Pest Control 4-3 behind two goals each from Matt Kretzman and Holly Belton. Jeff Christenson and Donald Christenson each had assists, while KB Belton had nine saves between the pipes.
Brent Laudicina led Island Pest in the loss with three goals, while Troy Shonk had 12 saves in goal.
Wash earned a 3-2 victory over Slim’s Place in the final game of the evening. Shawn Stanley led the way with two goals and an assist, while Austin Wash added one goal.
Rico Beissert and Josh Petit each scored one goal to lead Slim’s Place, which also received an assist from Gabby Westerman and 14 saves from Will Case in the loss.
Basketball race is tight
The adult basketball league at the center is tight from top to bottom with only two games separating first-place Gator Man Pools and last place Poppo’s Taqueria.
Gator Man is 4-2 followed by Duncan Real Estate, Sugar Beach Digital and Island Real Estate, which all sit with 3-3 records, while Poppo’s is 2-4.
Duncan raced past Sugar Beach in the opening game of Oct. 28 basketball action in the gym. Ray Gardner poured in 42 points while dishing out 10 assists to lead Duncan, which also received 24 points and eight rebounds from Jordan Demers. Tom Heald added 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory.
Matt Ray scored 28 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out five assists to lead Sugar Beach, which also received 18 points from Richard Fosmore and 11 points from Brandon Kern in the loss.
The second game of the night saw Gator Man run past Poppo’s 67-41 behind 17 points from Brandon Osmond and 16 points and eight rebounds from Aaron Dudukes. Cody Sullivan chipped in with 10 points to round out the scoring in the victory.
Shawn Hubbard scored 17 points and Nate Coleman added 12 points to lead Poppo’s, which also received 10 points from Teagan Purtil in the loss.
The final game of the evening saw Sugar Beach edge Island Real Estate 60-52 behind 27 points and 10 rebounds from Brandon Kern and 11 points and 13 rebounds from Eric Gledhill. Matt Ray chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds to complete the Sugar Beach scoring.
Scott Elisio’s 18 points and 12 points from Alban Gega led IRE in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play during Oct. 29 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Adin Shank and Hank Huyghe slipped past the team of Sam Samuels and Bob Palmer by a 21-19 score.
Three teams advanced to the knockout stage in Nov. 1 horseshoe action. The team of Bob Palmer and Steve Doyle drew the bye and watched as Karl Thomas and Sam Samuels edged Hank Huyghe and Tom Skoloda by a 23-20 score. In the finals, it was all Thomas and Samuels as they rolled to a 23-9 victory and a trip to the winner’s circle.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m.
