A man driving to work was arrested after hitting a bicyclist in Bradenton Beach.
Christopher N. Mundell, 19, of Bradenton, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury at 5:18 p.m. Feb. 28 in the 1400 block of Gulf Drive South, according to Bradenton Beach police reports.
Mundell’s car was traveling south and passing a stopped vehicle on the right when it struck the bike’s front tire, causing the bicyclist to fall. The stopped vehicle was waiting to turn left into a resort and the bicyclist was traveling south in a bike lane, according to police reports.
Manatee County Marine Rescue personnel were attending to the victim when Bradenton Beach police first responded. The bicyclist’s injuries included a possible right shoulder injury and lacerations above the eye, according to a BBPD report.
Mundell and a passenger were on their way to work in Longboat Key where law enforcement found them after the hit-and-run.
Interviewed by the Bradenton Beach police, the passenger said he heard and felt the crash on the right side of the vehicle, but didn’t see anything, and so they continued to work.
Mundell allegedly told police he was “freaked out” and didn’t know what to do. He asked to see the bicyclist to apologize, and repeatedly asked about the condition of the bicyclist during his interview, according to police report.
In addition to the felony hit-and-run charge, Bradenton Beach police charged Mundell with having no motor vehicle registration.
After Mundell’s arrest, he was transported to the Manatee County jail.
He posted $1,620 in bonds, and was released from jail.
Mundell’s arraignment is set for 9 a.m. Friday, April 10, at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1050 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton.
