The line would begin on the beach.
And, if Island musician Mike Sales achieves his goal, the line will end up in the Guinness World Records book.
Sales on April 7 will ask Bradenton Beach city commissioners to approve a special event application for the “World’s Largest Conga Line Attempt.”
The attempt would take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23, on the beach at the Moose Lodge 2188, 110 Gulf Drive S., Bradenton Beach.
Sales, in his application, proposed that any funds raised from the contest be dedicated to a campaign to transform Manatee County Animal Services into a “no-kill” service. That campaign has been championed by Holmes Beach resident and Islander employee Lisa Williams.
The special event application states, “We will attempt to set the world’s record for the longest conga line on sand. The event will involve citizens and volunteers.”
Sales had to specify he was aiming to stage the longest conga line on sand because a Guinness record for the longest conga line was set in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami. A Guinness spokeswoman said 119,986 people participated in that event in March 1988.
The commission meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at city hall, 107 Gulf Drive N., and Sales’ application is one of the earliest orders of business.
In other business, commissioners will consider the second reading of an ordinance updating the city’s election qualifying schedule and several invoices, as well as hold a public hearing on a special exception request allowing a property owner to build a dock longer than the 65 feet specified in city regulations.
