Judith Ruth Augsburger
Judith Ruth Augsburger, 82, died Aug. 2, in Bluffton, Ohio.
She was born Jan. 21, 1934, in Cortez, to the late John L. and Mamie Ruth (Bonnell) McDonald.
Raised in a commercial fishing family, she grew up eating mullet that her father provided from fishing and it was her favorite meal along with some grits.
On Feb. 12, 1956, she married Bill Augsburger, who preceded her in death on April 19, 1987.
She was a graduate of Manatee High School and a member of Samoset Baptist Church. She was a beautician, a housekeeper and along with her husband owned and operated the Horseshoe Bar in Bluffton.
She also was a Sunday school teacher and Girl Scouts leader.
Services were to be held Monday, Aug. 8, at Samoset Baptist Church, 3200 15th St. E. Bradenton Florida. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel in Bradenton was in charge of arrangements. Survivors include son John of Zebulon, North Carolina; daughter April Dorman of Bluffton; son Kevin of Bradenton; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Lois Biel
Lois Biel, 98, died July 30.
She was born May 23, 1918, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Roy and Elizabeth Forbeck.
After graduating high school, she attended Indiana State University, earning a degree in education. She worked as a social worker.
She married Robert Curry Biel of Terre Haute and they had one son, William Robert.
Mrs. Biel enjoyed her life in Terre Haute surrounded by many friends and family.
She and her husband retired to Anna Maria Island, where she spent lots of time golfing, volunteering in the box office for the Island Players theater in Anna Maria. She was known for her ability to recall seating preferences for season ticketholders at Island Players.
She was a member of the Key Royale Club and she walked many miles every day, well into her 90s, often from her home in Anna Maria to Minnie’s in Holmes Beach and back.
Mrs. Biel moved back to Indiana at the age of 93 to be closer to her son and other family.
There will be no service. Memorial donations may be made to the Island Players in Anna Maria or the Humane Society of Boone County, Indiana.
She is survived by son Bill and daughter-in-law Sherri; grandsons John and wife Chris and Samuel; niece Susan and husband John Moulton; and nephews Don and wife Peggy Kord and Kent and wife Shirley Biel.
Catherine Veronica S. Clarke
Catherine Veronica (Spitznagel) Clarke, 81, died Aug. 1.
She was the daughter of Maximilian Spitznagel and Marie Delia Murray. She was born Sept. 24, 1934, in Waverly, Maryland.
She graduated from Blessed Sacrament School and then went to Seton High School, where she graduated in 1952.
She married John Clarke in 1955 and, in 1957, they had a son, “John Jr.”
From 1952-56, Mrs. Clarke — or “Cass” as many knew her — worked for the C&P Telephone Co. She also was a devoted mother, wife and homemaker and the family did everything together.
Bowling was a passion. She and her husband were Maryland State champions and they bowled in events all over the United States.
In retirement, the couple followed their son from Catonsville and Abington, Maryland, to the Bradenton area, where they called Perico and Anna Maria islands home.
On April 21, 2006, Mrs. Clarke, after golfing for many years, scored a hole-in-one on the 12th hole at Pinebrook Golf Course.
On June 25, 2005, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a trip with friends and family to Las Vegas. They repeated the Vegas trip even after Mrs. Clarke was inflicted with Polymyositis and Sjogren’s Disease. Every day was a struggle, as she was limited to walking one small, minor step at a time. But she did it daily.
A Mass will be offered at SS Peter and Paul the Apostles Church in Bradenton at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday Aug. 10, with burial and a light lunch to follow on the property
Memorial donations may be made to Sjogren’s Syndrome Foundation in Bethesda, Maryland.
She is survived by son John Jr. and wife Jane Pratt and many nieces and nephews.
Glen Albert McDaniel
Glen Albert McDaniel, 47, formerly of Holmes Beach, died Aug. 1. He was born Jan. 8, 1969.
He worked at Shells restaurant for eight years as a waiter and even won a trip to the Kentucky Derby, where he sat next to Ivana Trump.
He loved animals and children, telling jokes and making people laugh. He was a great cook, singer and guitarist.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army in Bradenton.
Survivors include parents Alan and Kay Boyd Staymate and Glenn McDaniel; daughters Leandra McClellan and Dawn; son Shawn; granddaughter Alexis Hayes; sisters Melinda Powell and Amy Richter; longtime girlfriend Tricia Agle; and grandparents, four nephews, one niece, aunts, uncles and cousins.
