Sugar Beach on sweet path in basketball, soccer tees up
Sugar Beach Digital won its fourth game in a row for a sweet 4-0 season, one-game ahead of Harry’s Grill in the youth basketball league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Waterfront Restaurant follows with a 1-3 record while Salty Printing is still in search of its first victory.
Sugar Beach took on Waterfront in the first game of the evening Aug. 30 and came away with an 8-4 victory. Jack Proctor led the way by scoring all of the Sugar Beach points.
Evan Talucci and Jayden Sparks scored 2 points each to lead Waterfront in the loss.
The second game of the night saw Harry’s Grill keep pace in the standings with a 20-6 victory over Salty Printing behind 10 points from Kenneth Neiring. Grayson Mitchell added 8 points and Alex Cox added 2 points to complete the scoring in the victory.
Ewan Cloutier scored 4 points to lead Salty Printing, which also received 2 points from Harrison Schenerlien in the loss.
Register by Sept. 9 for center youth soccer
The center is still accepting registration for its fall youth soccer league. Divisions are organizing for players ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17. Players must register by Sept. 9 online at www.centerami.org or in person at the center.
Cost for center members is a $5 processing fee while non-members pay $90.
The seasons kicks off in early October and ends in early December.

Play underway in ‘Ugly’ cornhole league
The Ugly Grouper restaurant-bar at 5704 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, is sporting a cornhole league with games played Tuesday nights.
Teams must constist of a minimum of two people with the option of having subs or free agents available when a regular team member is unable to play a weekly game.
The teams in the league play for bragging rights, a league trophy and the first-place prize of 300 Grouper Bucks — to be spent at the Ugly Grouper. Second place also receives a trophy and 200 Grouper Bucks, while the third place winner will have a trophy and 100 Grouper Bucks to spend.
In addition, team members receive T-shirts and there will be photos and statistics posted to social media after league play to measure up the team standings.
The league has 14 teams led by Captain Morgan Charters, Island Coffee Haus HB, Amateur Corn Stars, Island Bazaar Beach Bums, Bag ’em and Tag ’em and Def Con 5, all boasting 1-0 records after the first week of action.

Volleyball club comes to Holmes Beach
Sirenia Beach Volleyball Club is accepting registration for its girl’s beach volleyball club.
The season runs Sept. 11-Nov. 20 with club practice at the Manatee Public Beach, 4000 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach. Cost for the season is $600, which covers Wednesday and Sunday practices, or there’s a $300 option to practice only on Sundays.
The club is under the direction of new Bradenton resident Jason Jones. Jones comes from Las Vegas, where he was a volunteer assistant at University of Nevada-Las Vegas, in addition to being a USA High Performance assistant coach. Jones also started the Vegas Pursuit Indoor and Beach Tournament series, which grew into a must-attend event. Going into its fourth year, the tournament boasts 80 teams from 15 states.
Tryouts for the Sirenia Club’s fall season will be 10 a.m.-noon Sunday, Sept. 11, at Manatee Beach. There is a $20 tryout fee. Interested players in the 12-18 age group can register online at sireniabvc.com.
Also on tap for Sirenia Beach Volleyball Club is a $100-per-player clinic Oct. 8 and a tournament Oct. 9 at the home beach.

Horseshoe news
Horseshoe action Aug. 31 at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits gave way to rains from Hermine, but the horseshoe regulars were back at the pits Sept. 3. Steve Doyle walked his way to the only 3-0 pool-play record and was the day’s outright champion.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
