The adult soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island moved Jan. 12 from regular season to four quarterfinal matches starting with No. 5 seed Eason Builders Group taking on fourth seed Wash Family Construction.
Wash advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2 victory behind two goals each from Matt Kretzman and Aaron Parkin. Jason Sato made five saves in goal to help preserve the victory.
Bing Robinson and Matt Plummer led Eason in the loss with a goal each, while Tyler Lancaster made five saves.
The second match saw No. 7 seed Jiffy Lube score a 6-3 upset victory over second seed Ross Built. Danny Anderson led the way in the victory with two goals, while Vince Circharo, Ed Moss, Heidi Johnston and Shawn Kaleta each scored a goal.
Greg Ross, Stetson Matthews and Connor Bystrom each scored a goal in the loss for Ross Built.
Third seed Anna Maria CrossFit narrowly averted another upset bid by No. 6 Acqua Aveda in a 5-4 victory that was decided by a penalty kick shootout.
The teams battled to a 4-4 tie in regulation. Will Kretzman scored three goals and Rico Beissert added a goal for CrossFit, while Nathan Kragt scored two goals for Acqua Aveda, which also received a goal each from Sean Flynn and John Zamora.
In the shootout, Anna Maria CrossFit made all five of their penalty kicks, while Kragt couldn’t convert on his shot and CrossFit won the shootout 5-4.
The last match of the evening saw top-seed Mason Martin Construction avoid the upset bids on an 8-4 victory over Slim’s Place behind four goals from Anthony Barberio. Nate Welch added two goals, while Frank Agnelli and Ted Hurst each finished with a goal in the victory.
Cole Peterson scored two goals each to lead Slim’s in the loss, which also received a goal each from Andre Lewis and Chris Klotz.
Playoff action continues with Mason Martin taking on Wash at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, followed by Anna Maria CrossFit battling Jiffy Lube on the pitch at 8:30 p.m.

Youth flag football action
Flag football in three youth divisions at the center has completed its second week of action and a bevy of games.
The action got underway the morning of Jan. 14 with an 11-13 division matchup between Anna Maria Oyster Bay and Progressive Cabinetry. Progressive rolled to a 32-6 victory over the Oyster Bar behind two touchdowns from Cole Pearson and one from Grant Shackleford. Ginger Muro also had a big game with two flag pulls, two interceptions and 80 rushing yards.
Oyster Bar was led by Brandon Yost, who threw for 15 yards including a five-yard touchdown pass to Travis Bates.
The second 11-13 game saw Miller Electric roll to a 20-8 victory over Planet Stone behind Shawn Balvin’s two touchdowns, an extra point and eight flag pulls. Gavin Johnston added a touchdown and Caleb O’Connor completed the scoring with an extra point.
Blake Balais scored the lone touchdown for Planet Stone and pulled in two interceptions in the loss.
The action then switched to the 8-10 division with three games played, starting with Slim’s Place flattening Cloud Pest Control by a 14-8 score. Colson Kragt threw for 95 yards and a touchdown, while also adding a 2-point conversion. Kendall Johnston had a big game on defense, finishing with a game-high five flag pulls and an interception that she returned for a touchdown.
Luke Winsper threw for 50 yards and a touchdown to Mike Bowes. Brett Balais completed the scoring with a two-point conversion in the loss.
Beach to Bay Construction and Bark & Co. Real Estate battled to a 20-20 tie in the second 8-10 division contest. Gregory Jordan led the way with two touchdowns, while Will Wright added a touchdown and a 2-point conversion.
Ashton Hovda paced Bark & Co. with three touchdowns, while Tommy Baugher added a 2-point conversion.
Lancaster Design shut out Salty Printing 12-0 behind 180 passing yards and two touchdown passes from Andrew Hyman. Kane Richardson and Kieran Cloutier each had a touchdown reception in the victory.
Maddox Culhane led Salty Printing with 35 receiving yards and a pair of interceptions.
Air & Energy rolled to a 21-8 victory over Duncan Real Estate to open action in the 14-17 division behind 195 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes from Rutger Langley. Silas Banyas and Morgan Horesh both had touchdown receptions, while Corey Jacques returned an interception for a touchdown.
Chris Snyder threw for 125 yards and a touchdown pass to lead Duncan, which received a touchdown from Marcus Boyles and a 2-point conversion from Jackson Hayes in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
Golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach got started Jan. 9 with a men’s nine-hole modified Stableford-system match.
John Cassese and Larry Pippel were on fire, each carding a plus-5 to share individual honors.
The team of Gary Duncan, Buddy Foy, Joe Tynan and Dave Richardson combined on a plus-7 to win the team title.
The men were back on the course Jan. 12 for a nine-hole scramble. Mike Pritchard, Dan Richardson and Bob Soos combined on a 3-under-par 29 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play to battle it out for the day’s bragging rights during Jan. 11 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
The team of Tim Sofran and Larry Delarber rolled to an easy 23-10 victory over Sam Samuels and Art Kingstad to win the day’s proceedings.
Jan. 14 action saw only the team of Tom Skoloda and Bob Brown earn the required three victories in pool play and were the outright champs.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
