Sailboat snared in Longboat Pass currents

The sailboat Hula Girl is pinned at the Longboat Pass Bridge on the Gulf side after striking the structure April 17 and becoming trapped in swift tidal currents. Coast Guard Station Cortez confirmed crews responded to the incident and assisted at the scene. A recent new moon may have contributed to stronger-than-normal currents due to an increased tidal range, a condition often amplified by wind and the narrow pass. Islander Photo: Danny Stasny
