Forged check alleged

Local law enforcement is investigating a claim that a check on a closed investment account was stolen and a signature forged.

The incident was reported Feb. 3 in Holmes Beach, according to a Manatee County Sheriff’s Office report. The MCSO, along with the HBPD, is investigating two alleged crimes — uttering a forged check and theft.

The report indicates that in 1998, a woman opened an investment account for her son, a minor at the time. In August 2010, just before her son’s 18th birthday, the woman said she learned that in 2006, without her approval, the investment account had been cashed in.

The woman then learned that a $272 check from the investment account had been mailed to a relative’s address on Anna Maria Island and cashed at a local Wachovia branch.

The woman’s signature on the cashed check was forged, according to the 14-page MCSO report, which also said the incident remains under investigation.
