Summer heats up, kids play cool indoor soccer

The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s summer indoor soccer league got under way July 6 with two games in the 6-9 age group.

The first game between Southern Greens and the Beach Bums was competitive and scoreless until the 12th minute, when Julius Peteriet stole the ball, dribbled up the left side and cut inside to score, giving Southern Greens a 1-0 lead. In a span of three minutes, Peteriet scored two more goals and Southern Greens took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Things didn’t get any better for the Beach Bums, as minutes into the second half, Southern Greens took advantage of a three-line violation, giving them an indirect kick. Angelina Sculco took the kick and put it on target. The Beach Bums goalie made the save, but inadvertently stepped backward into the goal — which gave Southern Greens a 4-0 lead.

Peteriet scored two more goals in the second half while Sculco added one to give Southern Greens a solid 7-0 victory.

Peteriet finished the game with five goals, while Sculco added a pair of goals in the victory.

The second game of the evening saw Island Dental Spa take on Fran Maxon Realty. The two teams battled it out for the first seven minutes before Taro de Haan stole the ball deep in the Spa defensive end and poked it into the empty net for a 1-0 Fran Maxon Realty lead.

Five minutes later, Conal Cassidy stole the ball deep in his end and passed forward to Luke Marvin on the left side. Marvin carried the ball forward before passing inside to Ryan Joseph, who finished far post to tie the score at 1-1.

Island Dental Spa jumped out to a 2-1 lead 18 seconds into the second half when Marvin took the ball up the left side and fired a shot from a bad angle on goal. The Maxon goalie made the initial save, but the ball bounced around in front of their goal before an astute Ava Zink poked it in for a 2-1 Spa lead.

Three minutes later, with Fran Maxon Realty pressuring the Island Dental Spa defense, Elizabeth Laviolette fired a hard-angle shot that got underneath the Island Dental Spa goalie to tie the score at 2-2.

With 14:53 left to play after a three-line violation by Fran Maxon Realty, Marvin took the free kick. It was blocked, but he followed his shot and blasted home the rebound to give Island Dental Spa a 3-2 lead.

Fran Maxon Realty continued to pressure the Island Dental Spa defense and finally broke through at the 10:38 mark when Laviolette fired a shot on goal that was blocked, but Ozzy Lonzo was there to poke in the rebound and tie the score at 3-3.

Four minutes later, Cassidy again stole the ball deep in his end and passed forward to Marvin, who carried the ball up the left side before cutting in and ripping a rocket that tucked inside the far post for a 4-3 lead with under seven minutes to play.

The score remained 4-3 until there was 2:38 left to play and de Haan stole the ball at midfield and dribbled in and scored the game-tying goal.

The two teams both tried in vain to score a game-winner, but the match ended in an exciting 4-4 tie.

De Haan led Fran Maxon with two goals while Laviolette and Lonzo each added one goal. Marvin’s two goals paced Island Dental Spa while Joseph and Zink each added one goal in the tie.

Adult flag football news

It was another exciting, fun night of coed adult flag football action at the Anna Maria Island Community Center July 7.

The MartiniVille Saints continue to set the pace as the only undefeated team in the league, which puts them a game up in first place over the hard-charging Agnelli Pool & Spa Dolphins. Agnelli sits alone in second place with a 3-1 record, while Tyler’s Ice Cream Steelers, Sato Real Estate Browns and Integrity Sound Redskins all are 2-2. The Sun Panthers, Slim’s Place Patriots and Beach to Bay Construction Bucs are tied at the bottom at 1-3.

MartiniVille remained undefeated with an easy 27-6 win over Slim’s Place Patriots, while Sato Real Estate Browns rolled past Sun Panthers 31-12. Integrity Sound Redskins got back to .500 with a 42-26 victory over Tyler’s Ice Cream Steelers, while the game of the week saw Agnelli edge Beach to Bay 35-33.

Agnelli quarterback Mike Shaughnessy led the way by completing 12 of 16 passes for 160 yards and three touchdown passes. Two of his touchdown passes went to Tim Shaughnessy, who finished with 61 receiving yards, rushed for 38 yards and added a pair of extra points. Brianna Shaughnessy added 39 receiving yards and an extra point, while Eric Gledhill finished with 56 receiving yards and a pair of extra points.

Defensively the Dolphins were led by Zach Scheild, who finished with six flag pulls and two interceptions including one that he returned for a touchdown. Gledhill added five pulls and a quarterback sack in the victory.

Beach to Bay Bucs was led by quarterback Larry Berkery, who completed 15-of-27 passes for 176 yards and five touchdown passes. His main target was Shawn Kaleta, who finished with five catches for 82 yards and three touchdowns. Tony Peterill added 54 receiving yards, including a touchdown, an extra point and a two-point conversion. Erin Heckler completed the scoring for the Bucs with one touchdown and 21 receiving yards. Peterill and Katie Berzowski led the defense with two flag pulls each, while Berkery and Kaleta each added one pull in the loss.

Key Royale golf news

The Key Royale Club men played a nine-hole, team scramble July 7. The team of Fred Miller, Mike Pritchett and John Coultas combined to card a 7-under-par 25 to take first-place honors for the day.

The men played an 18-hole, best-ball-of-foursome match July 6 when the team of Pieter Thomassen, Carl Voyles, Peter Proxy and Bob Elliott combined to card a 9-under-par 55 and take first place by three strokes. The team of Larry Fowler, Dennis Schavey, Charlie Knopp and Bob Dickinson took second place with a 6-under-par 58.

The women of the Key Royale Club played a nine-hole, individual-low-net golf game July 5. Erma McMullen fired a 4-under-par 28 to earn a two-shot victory over Terry Westby and Meridith Slavin, who tied for second at 2-under-par 30. Markie Ksiazek carded an even-par 32 to take third.

Horseshoe news

For the second time in a week, horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits produced only one team with three pool-play victories. As such, Jerry Disbrow and Ron Pepka were the July 9’s (and week’s) outright champs with the team of Steve Grossman and Norm Good taking second place on a 2-1 record.

Jerry Disbrow and Ron Pepka were the only team to earn the required three wins and were declared the outright champs during July 6 horseshoe action.

Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.

There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
