Shirley A. O’Day

Shirley A. O’Day, age 78, of Anna Maria, died Aug. 13. She was born Feb. 22, 1933, in Easton, Md., and grew up in Seaford, Del.

Mrs. O’Day earned her bachelor’s degree at University of Delaware, a master’s degree at West Chester University and her doctorate at Temple University. Her career included teaching at public schools in Wilmington, Del., Gettysburg College and Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J. She retired as dean emeritus of graduate studies.

Mrs. O’Day was a member of the city of Anna Maria Code Enforcement Board.

She was past president of the Artists Guild of Anna Maria Island and the Village Green women’s golf group. She started up the Manatee County Daybreakers Womens Golf Association. She was a master wood carver and was often seen fishing on the piers on Anna Maria Island.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 25 in the chapel of the Roser Memorial Community Church, 512 Pine Ave., Anna Maria. Mrs. O’Day is survived by sister Janet O. and husband Walt English of Rhodesdale, Md.; nephew Michael Ellingsworth; grand-nephews Bradley and Conor Ellingsworth of Laurel, Del.; and dear friend, Winifred Whalen.

John A. Ohde

John A. Ohde, 71, of Bradenton, died Aug. 4. He had retired to Bradenton from Hinsdale, Ill., in 1999, and was, he said, “A Floridian by choice.”

Mr. Ohde was a graduate of St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Ind., and went on to work with computers, retiring as a senior systems analyst from Combined Insurance of Chicago. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Bears, Bulls and White Sox.

A memorial service is being planned in the fall in Chicago.

Mr. Ohde is suvived by his wife, Sandra Walsh; children Lisa Williams, Lara Skala and Sean and wife Lee Ann Ohde; grandchildren Courtney and husband Brian, Brandon, Andrea, Annie, Justin, Allison and Kaitlyn; and great-grandchild Sammy.

Richard F. Saenger

Richard F. Saenger, 73, of Bradenton, died Aug. 6. He was born in New York City and moved to Bradenton in 1995.

Mr. Saenger was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended St. Bernard Catholic Church in Holmes Beach and was a member of the Bradenton Beach Moose Lodge No. 2188.

Mr. Saenger is survived by daughters Mary Magagnos of Punta Gorda, Kathleen Gabriel of Ormond Beach; mother Josephine Saenger of Bradenton; and

five grandchildren.

Jennifer Harnish Walsh

Jennifer Harnish Walsh, 49, of Port Orange, died Aug. 6. She was born in Tampa and resided on Anna Maria Island until 1987.

Mrs. Walsh was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. She was a registrar for Palmer Chiropractic in Port Orange, a financial aide, a counselor at Embry Riddle, and an administrative assistant at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. She enjoyed travel to the mountains, spending time with her family and gardening.

A memorial service was held Aug. 12 at Crossroads Baptist Church, Daytona Beach. An Anna Maria Island memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial was in Sea Pines Memorial Gardens in Edgewater.

Mrs. Walsh is survived by her husband of 21 years, Jimmy; daughter Jamie Walsh of Port Orange; mother Bonnie Harnish of Bradenton; brothers Michael and Jeff Harnish, both of Bradenton, and Scott of Belize; and sister Sandy Mixon of Richmond Hill, Ga.
