Center’s adult basketball final matchup set

 

Playoff action in the Anna Maria Island Community Center’s adult coed basketball league saw both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds get knocked off Nov. 8.

Top seed Unique Mobile Detailing, already a player short due to Lindsey Weaver’s broken foot, had three of the remaining six players foul out in the fourth quarter. The score had Unique trailing Agnelli Pool & Spa by a 45-44 score.

Agnelli was led by Aaron Duduks’ 19 points and 12 points from Nate Coleman. Frank Agnelli and Tyler Krauss each added 6 points in the victory. Agnelli, the fifth seed in the tournament, now moves into the finals where they face third-seed Beach to Bay Construction, which blew out second-seeded Southern Greens 70-49.

Beach to Bay got off to a hot start behind the shooting of Scott Eason, who had 10 first-quarter points as Beach to Bay jumped out to a 21-9 lead. Southern Greens closed to within 29-22 in the second quarter, but that was as close as it would get.

Nick Diaz scored 12 third-quarter points to key a 25-11 run and put the game out of reach. Kevin Austin scored 11 fourth-quarter points for Southern Greens, but the hole was dug too deep.

Eason led Beach to Bay with 28 points, including four three-pointers, while Diaz added 27 points. George Imes chipped in with 12 points, while point guard Tommy Tyrell finished with 6 points in the victory.

Robby Bennett’s 20 points led Southern Greens, but he quit the game in the fourth quarter and left his team short. Austin finished with 17 points, while Wayne Grant and Chuck McCracken finished with six points apiece in the loss.

 

Soccer season moves to playoffs

AMICC soccer league playoffs get started this week and aside from Mr. Bones BBQ defeating Wash Family Construction Nov. 9, there were no games last week to influence playoff matchups.

Wash’s loss gave Autoway Ford first place in Division I and matches them up against last-place Mr. Bones.

However, in the win-or-go home world of soccer playoffs, anything can happen.

Gettel Toyota is the regular-season champ of Division III, while LaPensee Plumbing took the top spot in Division II.

Ross Built grabbed the top spot in the adult coed division, and playoff season starts for them Nov. 17.

Key Royale golf news

Key Royale Club golf professional Danny Williams has announced that Don Findley will now be providing golf lessons at the club.

Findley won the Southeast teacher of the year honors from Spaulding Golf in 1990 during his 22-year career at El Conquistador Country Club.

Williams and Findley are long-time associates.

“Adding Don’s clinic and private teaching skills is a great benefit to the club,” said Williams. “In addition to his long career at El Conquistador, Don has taught at Longboat Key Club and Sarasota Golf Club.”

Golf action is in full swing at the Key Royale Club as the weather cools in Holmes Beach.

The men played individual-low-net and team-low-net matches Nov. 12. First place went to the team of Bob Elliott, Carl Voyles, Gary Harris and Jim Thorton. Harrold McKamish carded an 8-under-par 56 to win individual honors, while Voyles was three shots back in second.

The men played a two-best-balls-of-foursome match Nov. 9. The team of Vince Mercadante, Jim Mixon, Gino Mercadante and Paul Proxy took first place with a 27 under 101. Six shots back in second place was the team of Gary Harris, Bob Elliott, Jim Thorton and Carl Voyles. Earl Ritchie, Mike Garnhart, Ed Havlik and Peter Proxy teamed to finish one shot back in third place.

The women of the Key Royale Club got out on the course Nov. 8 for a nine-hole, low-net-in-flight game. Marilyn Thorton took first place in Flight A with a 3-under-par 29, one shot better than Lynn Dailey who finished in second place.

Flight B winner was Sue Wheeler with a 5-under-par 27. Second place went to Terry Westby and Zoey Gavin, both at 3-under-par 29.

Mary Anne Kaemmerlen’s 4-under par 28 was the top score in Flight C by two shots over second-place finisher Barbara Neville.

Eunice Warda carded a 3-under par 29 to win Flight D by two shots over Trish Kruger.

The men played a best-ball-of-foursome match Nov. 7. Omar Trolard, Bob Dickenson and Fred Meyer carded a 10-under-par 22, matching the scorecard of Jim Auch, Charlie Knopp and Chett Hutton to finish in a tie for first place.

 

Horseshoe news

Five teams won a pair of games in pool play and were left to battle it out in the elimination round during Nov. 12 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.

Steve Grossman and Jerry Disbrow drew the bye and watched as George McKay and Tom Markey defeated Debbie Rhodes and John Crawford 22-8. Dave Lansaw and Bruce Copeland defeated Gene Bobeldyk and Herb Puryear 21-0 in the other semifinal. Grossman-Disbrow dispatched Lansaw-Copeland 21-6 to advance to the finals where they lost to McKay and Markey.

Six teams advanced to the knockout stage during Nov. 5 horseshoe action. John Johnson and Herb Puryear defeated Paul Shearer and Steve Doyle 21-12 in one quarterfinal match, while Gene Bobeldyk and Tim Sofran defeated Dave Lansaw and Steve Grossman 21-13. The last quarterfinal match saw Sam Samuels roll past John Crawford and Norm Langeland 21-9.

Puryear-Johnson drew the bye into the finals and watched as Samuels easily dispatched Bobeldyk and Sofran by a 22-8 score before obliterating Puryear and Johnson 21-0 in the finals.

Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.

There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
