Playoffs just around the corner

 

The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s fall recreational soccer season is winding to a close and playoffs are just around the corner. Gettel Toyota in Division III and LaPensee Plumbing in Division II have locked up the top seed in their divisions, ensuring a favorable first-round playoff opponent.

That’s not the case in Division I where Autoway Ford is feeling the heat from Wash Family Construction. Autoway holds a slim, two-point lead, but if Wash defeats last place Mr. Bones BBQ Nov. 9, Wash will overtake Ford as the top seed.

LaPensee Plumbing solidified its hold on the top seed with an impressive, 5-1 victory over second-place Jen Crady Massage on Nov. 1.

Early on in the match, Jen Crady Massage was dominating LaPensee as Trent Shackleford, Olivia Glavan and Aiden Grumley all had scoring chances, but were unable to break through. Shackleford finally came through in the 12th minute, when he one-timed an attempted clearing pass past the LaPensee goalie for a 1-0 lead.

Crady’s lead held until the 17th minute when Sydney Leachford passed the ball up the right side to Joe Rogers, who blasted a rocket that tucked inside the upper left corner to tie the score at 1-1.

Rogers almost gave LaPensee the lead in the closing seconds of the first half, but his shot from the right side went over the goal.

The opening minutes of the second half were a harbinger of things to come for the Crady team, as LaPensee was all over them. In one sequence, the Crady team had three opportunities to clear the ball, but was unable to advance out of the danger zone. One Crady attempt proved fatal, as LaPensee’s Corbin Gregg volleyed the ball past the goalie for a 2-1 lead.

Six minutes later, Crady Massage was again having trouble clearing the ball and inadvertently scored an own goal, giving LaPensee a 3-1 lead.

LaPensee added to its lead in the 42nd minute when Jean-Paul Russo cleared the ball from deep in his end to Rogers, who got behind the Massage defense. Rogers outran the defenders and deftly targeted the near post for a 4-1 LaPensee Plumbing lead.

The final goal came when Rogers picked off an attempted clearing pass and left it for teammate Sullivan Ferreira, who scored to finish an impressive 5-1 victory.

In other Division II action, LaPensee defeated Eat Here by a 4-0 score Nov. 2. Ferreira led the way with three goals, while Russo added one goal in the victory.

In Division III action Nov. 2, Island Pest Control gave undefeated Gettel Toyota something to consider as the playoffs approach, earning a 5-5 tie. Sean Rodriguez scored three goals and Julius Petereit added two goals to lead Island Pest in the tie. Daniel Sentman and Daniel Fritz paced Gettel with two goals apiece, while Jack Barnes added one goal in the tie.

The Feast defeated West Coast Surf Shop 4-2 in the other Division III game last week. Gerrardo Serrano scored four goals to lead Feast in the Nov. 4 victory, while Ryan Joseph and Luke Marvin notched one goal each in the loss.

Division III Wash Family Construction blasted Autoway Ford 7-3 Nov. 2 to put themselves in position to take over first place. Nico Calleja led the way with three goals, while Neil Carper, Gavin Sentman, Cortni Wash and Tyler Yavalar each added one goal. Danielle Capparelli, Keiran Grumley and Michael Latimer led Ford with one goal apiece in the loss.

Spinnakers Vacation Cottages and Autoway Ford battled to a 3-3 tie Nov. 4. Henrik Hellem-Brusso scored three goals for Spinnakers, while Michael Latimer scored three for Autoway in the tie.

 

Adult basketball playoffs start

The center’s adult coed basketball league started its second season playoffs Nov. 1, with two first-round games. The action continued this week, after press time at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 with a pair of second-round playoff games.

Fourth-seeded Bowes Imaging took on No. 3 seed Agnelli Pool & Spa with a chance at No. 1 seed Unique Mobile Detailing on the line. Agnelli pulled off the minor upset with a 65-62 overtime victory. Aaron Duduks scored 4 points in overtime play and finished with a game-high 37 points to go along with 2 points from Frank Agnelli. A free throw from Lelani Bright provided the winning margin for Agnelli Pool & Spa.

Nate Coleman added 15 points, while FrankAgnelli finished with 8 points in the victory. Mikeal Kasten scored 23 points that, along with Mark Templeton’s 12 points, lead Bowes Imaging. Tyler Bekkerus and Steven Ayers added 9 points apiece in the loss.

Beach to Bay Construction advanced to the second round with an easy 70-44 victory over the Sun. 25 points from Nick Diaz and 21 from Scott Eason paced Beach to Bay, which also received 11 points apiece from George Imes and Tommy Tyrell in the victory. Larry Berkery and Billy Malfese scored 13 points each to lead the Sun, which also received 11 points from Scott Dell and 7 points from Paul Kurtz in the loss.

 

Ross holds first in adult soccer

Ross Built recorded a 4-3 victory over Florida Discount Sign during adult coed soccer action at the center Nov. 3. A loss by Ross Built would have dropped them into a tie with Jessie’s Island Store, which saw an 8-3 winner over Wash Family Construction.

As the season winds down, teams are jockeying for seed positions for the Island Cup final, which will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 2

Ross Built received a goal each from Eric Howe, Chrissy Rice, Greg Ross and Toby Wicklund in the victory. Matt Kretzman scored twice for Florida Discount Signs, which also received one goal from Harrison Hampton in the loss.

Key Royale golf news

There was plenty of action last week on the Key Royale Club links, starting with a best-ball-of-foursome match played Nov. 2. The team of Bob Elliott, Carl Voyles, Jim Thorton and Gary Harris took first place with a 16-under-par 48. They were two shots better than the 14-under-par carded by Vince Mercadante, Ed Havlik, Earl Huntzinger and Mike Garnhart.

The Key Royale women managed to get out on the course for an individual-low-net match Nov. 1. Judy Crowe took home first place in Flight A with a 3-under-par 29, two shots better than Maxine Mitchell. Penny Williams and Helen Pollock tied for third place at even-par 32.

Nancy King and Barb Lindeman both carded 1-under-par 31s to finish in a tie for first place in Flight B. Margrit Layh and Judy Ward tied for second at even-par 32.

Flight C winner was Joanne Ozdych blistered the course with a 4-under-par 28, three shots better than second-place finishers Mardene Eichorn and Sue Wheeler.

Jan Jump also carded a 4-under-par 28 to take first place in Flight D. Mary Pat Swamy was 2 under par or second place.

Joyce Reith won the game of the day — individual low putts — with 14, while Nancy King chipped in on No. 7.

The men played a nine-hole modified stableford or quota points match on Nov. 1. Gary Duncan’s plus five gave him first place in the individual category while also helping teammates Gary Razzi, Art McMillan and Fred Miller take the team title for the day with a plus four score.

 

Horseshoe news

Two teams emerged from Nov. 2 pool play during horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Team Norm — Norm Good and Norm Langeland —defeated Jay Disbrow and Hank Huyghe by a 23-17 score in the championship match.

Play gets under way at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.

There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
