With evaluations and team selection behind them, participants in the fall youth soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island got acclimated Sept. 7 to new teammates and competition with preseason scrimmages on the center pitch.
Four teams were selected in August for kids in the age 4 and under division and six teams in the 7U instructional divisions, where they forego scores and standings to focus on learning the sport.
The 10U division will compete on six teams, while the14Us were named to three teams. The seasons conclude Oct. 25, when the 10U and 14U divisions will match up Nov. 7-8 playoffs.
Coaches worked Sept. 7 with their teams on basic skills — dribbling, passing, shooting and trapping — and put those skills to the test in scrimmages.
No scores were kept, so no results and no standings but players and parents enjoyed the action.
The season was to kick off for real Sept. 13 — prior to press time for The Islander — as games are Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. and continuing until the last game kicks off at 7 p.m. Stay tuned to The Islander for weekly scores, stats and standings.
Horseshoe action Sept. 7 at the Anna Maria City Hall pits saw three teams advance to the knockout stage after posting 3-0 records during pool play. Bob Heiger and Steve Doyle drew the bye and watched as Norm Good edged Jerry Disbrow and Tom Farrington 22-19 to advance to the championship game. Heiger and Doyle earned their trip to the winner’s circle with a convincing 21-7 victory over Good.
Action Sept. 10 saw three teams advance to the playoffs with 2-1 records, but rain ended the day’s competition.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Forty-eight golfers took advantage of perfect weather and course conditions Sept. 5 to participate in the Key Royale Club annual Labor Day golf tournament. Playing a combination of a scramble/shamble, the team of Jackie Gorski, Art McMillan, Tom Nelson and Quentin Talbert combined on a 1-under-par 53 to top the competition. Second place went to the team of Kathy and David Johnson, Warren Stephens and John Pala with a score of even-par 54.
Diane Miller won the longest-drive contest for the women, while Steve Vasbinder outdrove the men. Pat Olesen hit her tee shot 13 feet from the pin to win the closest-to-the-pin contest for the women, while Tom Nelson hit the pin with his tee shot and finished 1 foot, 9 inches away. Pat Olesen was back in the winner’s circle for the putting contest in a playoff against Dan Hoversten II.
Following the golf, everyone enjoyed fried chicken, salads, desserts and their favorite beverages at the clubhouse.
Center kicks off fall with BYOB kickball
Ready for a rowdy game of kickball?
The Center of Anna Maria Island will host “Red Cup” Kickball for adults Oct. 3-Nov. 28.
Games will be played Mondays at 6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Registration — limited to players over 21 — is required by Sept. 30.
The cost will be $500 per teams of 8-15 players 21 and older.
The announcement from the center, “Bring your own team and drinks.”
