Center fall basketball league rolls on, soccer games, too
As the Anna Maria Island Community Center Adult Basketball League moves into its fifth week, Island Real Estate has surged in the standings to a 3-1 record. It holds a one-game lead over 2-1 Sugar Beach Digital and 2-2 Poppos, while Gator Man Pools and Duncan Real Estate follow, each sitting on one victory.
With five teams in the league, each team occasionally has two games in one night and Island Real Estate took advantage of the scheduling quirk to jump to the top of the standings with a 71-61 win over Gator Man Pools Oct. 14. They followed the victory with a 69-57 win over Duncan Real Estate the same night.
The IRE-Gator Man victory resulted from a balanced scoring attack that saw four of six players notch double-figure scoring. They were led by Scott Elisio’s 25 points and eight rebounds and Alex Tanonan with 16 points and seven rebounds. Alban Gega chipped in with 15 points, while Terry Henry finished with 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.
Aaron Dudukes had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead Gator Man Pools in the loss, with 11 points and 14 rebounds coming from Michael Scpondra and 11 points from Brandon Osmond.
Island Real Estate had little problem in defeating Duncan Real Estate in the final game of the night. Four players were in double figures with 17 points coming from Karri Stephens. Alex Tanonan and Alban Gega chipped in with 15 points each in the victory, while Scott Elisio finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Ray Gardner had 19 points and six assists to lead Duncan Real Estate, which also received 18 points and nine rebounds from Jordan Demers. Tom Heald completed the scoring in the loss for Duncan Real Estate with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Sugar Beach Digital took on Poppos in another Oct. 14 game and came away with a 63-55 victory behind 32 points from Brandon Kern and 14 points and 11 rebounds from Matt Ray. Bobby Dawes finished with 13 points to round out the scoring in the victory for Sugar Beach Digital.
Matt Dwyer’s 15 points and 14 points from Shawn Hubbard paced Poppos, which also received 13 points from Teagan Purtil in the loss.
Soccer news
Fall soccer continues at the center, where teams are shaping into contenders and pretenders.
Gulf-Bay Realty and Anna Maria Donuts are tied atop the 8-10 division with 3-1 records with Bowes Imaging a game back with a 2-2 record. Miller Electric follows with a 1-2-1 record, just ahead of Tyler’s Ice Cream which brings up the rear with a 0-3-1 record.
The 11-13 division has Jen Crady Massage on top of the standings with a 4-1-1 record, although Smile Deep is lurking close behind with an undefeated record of 3-0. Sugar Beach Digital at 1-4 and the Feast at 0-3-1 follow in the standings.
The two-team 14-17 division has AMI Fitness on top with a two wins and a tie over Wash Family Construction.
In 8-10 division action Oct. 13, Bowes Imaging recorded a 5-4 victory over Anna Maria Donuts behind five goals from Cole Pearson. The Donuts received three goals from Anthony Monetti and one goal from Thomas Heckler in the loss.
Miller Electric came away Oct. 17with its first victory on the season in the 8-10 division, defeating Bowes Imaging 4-2. Gavin Johnston scored three goals to lead Miller, which also received one goal from Ozzy Lonzo in the victory.
Cole Pearson scored two goals to lead Bowes.
Gulf-Bay Realty earned its third victory of the season Oct. 17 thanks to a 6-1 win over Tyler’s Ice Cream in the second 8-10 division game of the night. Anthony Nguyen scored three goals to lead Gulf-Bay Realty, which also received a pair of goals from Jeremiah Sculco and one goal from Phillipe Baumgartner in the victory.
Travis Bates scored the lone goal for Tyler’s.
The 11-13 division saw first-place Jen Crady Massage battle to a 1-1 tie with last-place Feast Oct. 13. Hannah McCracken notched the lone goal for the Feast, while Sean Rodriguez scored for Jen Crady.
Smile Deep remained unbeaten on a 4-1 victory over Jen Crady Massage in Oct. 15 action. Ava Zink led the way with two goals in the victory, while Chris Snyder and Javier Rivera each scored one. Lila Naeher notched the lone goal for Jen Crady.
Jen Crady bounced back by rolling to a 5-2 victory over Sugar Beach Digital behind two goals each from Alex and Sean Rodriguez. David Daigle completed the scoring with one goal in the victory.
Daniel Sentman and Greg Corbin scored one goal each in the loss to lead Sugar Beach Digital.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play during Oct. 15 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. In the finals, Sam Samuels and Jay Disbrow staged a late rally to earn a come-from-behind 23-16 victory over Hank Huyghe and Steve Grossman.
Oct. 18 action also saw two teams advance to the knockout round. Huyghe and teammate Tom Skoloda defeated Samuels and Bob Heiger 21-15 to earn bragging rights for the day.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. and everyone is welcome to play.
