Anna Maria Donuts takes soccer victory on hat trick
Anna Maria Donuts remained on top in the Anna Maria Island Community Center Soccer League 8-10 age division thanks to a solid 4-1 victory over Tyler’s Ice Cream Oct. 22 at the center.
Anna Maria Donuts got on the scoreboard early in the first half when an end-to-end run by Anthony Monetti was culminated by a rebound goal from Monetti. He initially got off a shot, but as Tyler’s Ice Cream goalie Emma Laade made the save, she couldn’t hold onto the ball. It bounced off of defensive and offensive players before landing at Monetti’s feet and he finished the scoring chance to give Anna Maria Donuts a 1-0 lead.
Tyler’s Ice Cream tied the score at 1-1 in the 10th minute, when defender Reese Reilly made a defensive stop deep in her own end and passed ahead to Sam Waterman. Waterman dribbled the length of the field and finished with his left foot to give the Tyler’s faithful some hope.
Anna Maria Donuts retook the lead in the 19th minute when Fiona Turner-Leatham carried the ball up the right side before crossing to a wide-open Thomas Heckler, who finished to give Anna Maria Donuts a 2-1 lead.
Just before the half ended, Anna Maria Donuts extended its lead. Heckler found Monetti on the left edge of the goalie box. Monetti carried the ball in and ripped two close-range shots that Laade managed to save but, on the third attempt, he slid the ball past her for a 3-1 lead.
Anna Maria Donuts came out in the second half determined to hold onto its lead, placing the athletic Monetti on defense and Heckler in goal. The strategy worked to perfection as Monetti repeatedly denied any running room for Waterman, Tyler’s primary offensive weapon.
Tyler’s had one good scoring chance at the 10-minute mark when Lance Valadie got loose up the left side. He dribbled inside the box and fired a strong shot, but Heckler was there to make the save and preserve the Donuts’ 3-1 lead.
With the game in stoppage time, Monetti raced forward to receive a throwin from Turner Leatham and scored to make the final score 4-1 for the doughnut-makers.
Monetti finished with three goals to lead Anna Maria Donuts, while Heckler finished with a goal and an assist. Leatham played solid defense and finished with two assists.
Waterman scored the lone goal for Tyler’s Ice Cream, which received strong play from goalies Laade and Ava Alderson in the loss.
Horseshoe news
It was “the week of the walker” for players at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Hank Huyghe walked his way to the only 3-0 pool-play record during Oct. 22 action and was the day’s outright champion.
Oct. 25 action saw three teams emerge from pool play. Tim Sofran and Tom Skoloda drew the bye into the finals and watched as walker Bob Palmer edged Jerry Disbrow and Norm Langland by a 22-17 score to advance to the finals. Palmer destroyed Sofran and Skoloda by a 23-3 in the final to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. and everyone’s welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The women of the Key Royale Club opened their 2014-15 golf season Oct. 21 with a nine-hole, individual-low-net and low-gross match in four flights.
Phyllis Roe fired a 5-over-par 37 for the low-gross score in all flights. Flight A low-net winner was Gloria LaDue, who finished at 1-under-par 31.
Sue Wheeler rode a chip-in birdie on the seventh hole to a 43 to take low gross in Flight B. Carol Duncan’s 1-under-par 31 was low-net in Flight B.
Sally Martin carded a gross score of 50 to take first place in Flight C, while Kathy Porter’s 2-over-par 34 gave her low-net in the flight.
Low gross in Flight D was Markie Ksiazek, who finished with a 48. Sally York’s even-par 32 was good for low-net in the flight.
