Did you know? Florida’s Move Over law requires that motorists to move over when approaching an emergency or law enforcement vehicle. If driving on a roadway with multiple lanes of travel in the same direction, motorists must vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
If a motorist cannot safely move over, the driver must slow to a speed of 20 mph below the posted speed limit unless directed otherwise by a law enforcement officer.
Last year, the law was amended to also apply to sanitation and utility service vehicles.
Also, the Florida Department of Transportation encourages motorists to slow down and use caution when approaching work crews on or along roadsides, where exceeding the speed limit can double the fine.
The DOT has issued the following alert for driving in the area:
• State Road 789 at the Longboat Key Drawbridge: Crews are working on the bridge and motorists should expect intermittent overnight northbound and southbound lane closures 9 p.m.-4 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.
• State Road 684/Cortez Road at the Cortez Bridge, from east of Gulf Drive to west of 127th Street West: Crews will work on the bridge piles jackets and span locks. Work on the bridge is expected to be completed this month or next.
