Two NFL youth flag teams still chasing gridiron perfection


As the regular season of the NFL Flag Football League at the Anna Maria Island Community Center heads into the second half of the schedule, two teams are still sporting undefeated records.

The Buccaneers sit atop the 8-10 division with a perfect 5-0 record, although far from comfortable in the top spot. The Chiefs and Bears are right on their heels with matching 4-1 records, while Bowes Imaging Lions are another game back at 3-2. Anna Maria Realty Dolphins and Tyler’s Ice Cream Vikings bring up the rear with both teams in search of a first victory.

The Buccaneers stayed unbeaten thanks to a pair of close victories last week. They defeated the Chiefs 23-13 Feb. 2 and followed with a tight, 14-12 victory over Tyler’s Ice Cream Vikings Feb. 5. The Seahawks edged Anna Maria Realty Dolphins 13-7 to close out Feb. 6 action, but the earlier game between Bowes Imaging Lions and the Bears was the game to watch.

The Lions tamed the Bears 20-18 behind a strong game from Fiona Leatham-Turner. She ran for two touchdowns while adding a team-high five flag pulls on defense. Anthony Monetti chipped in with a touchdown run and a two-point conversion to complete the scoring for the Lions.

The Bears were led by Gavin Johnston, who ran for one touchdown and threw for two more. Charlie Faul and Billy Jackson both had a touchdown reception in the loss.

The Saints also are chasing a perfect season. They are on top of the 11-13 division with a 4-0 record, but the Dolphins are right behind at 4-1. The Buccaneers follow with a 2-1 record, while the Colts, Swordfish Grill Seahawks and Amanda Richardson Salon Cowboys follow, each with one victory.

There were two blowout decisions in the 11-13 division in the past week. The Dolphins shutout the Colts 30-0 Feb. 2, while the Saints corralled the Cowboys 40-6 in the second game of the evening.

The 14-17 division has Lattitude Limosine Falcons and the Redskins on top of the standings with matching 4-1 records with the Eagles right behind at 3-2. Island Mail & More Ravens and LPAC Cardinals follow with 2-3 records, while Keller Williams Buccaneers brings up the rear with an 0-5 record.

The Redskins edged the Eagles 24-19 to open 14-17 division action Feb. 3. Lattitude Limosine Falcons blew out Keller Williams Buccaneers 34-12 in the second game of the evening. The final game of the night was the game of the week and saw LPAC Cardinals edge Island Mail & More Ravens 26-20.

The Cardinals were led by Joey Stewart who ran for a touchdown and threw for one. Tyler Pearson ran for a touchdown, caught a touchdown and added an extra point.

The Ravens were led by Cody Tsai’s pair of touchdown passes to Matthew Manger and Austin Collandra. Joey Harris added a touchdown run and a two-point conversion to complete the scoring in the loss.

Horseshoe news

Four teams emerged from pool play Feb. 4 in horseshoe action at Anna Maria City Hall. The team of Gene Bobeldyk and Bob Lee obliterated the team of Dom Livedoti and Steve Fry 21-2 in the first semifinal match, while Bob Palmer and Adin Shank edged Rob Bussey and Bob Rowley 23-16 in the second match. Bobeldyk-Lee defeated Palmer-Shank 22-15 in the finals to earn a trip to the winner’s circle.

Feb. 7 action saw two teams advance to the knockout round to battle for the day’s bragging rights. The team of Tim Sofran and Gene Bobeldyk were crowned champs at the pits after defeating the team of Bob Lee and Jerry Disbrow 21-15, giving Bobeldyk his second trip to the winner’s circle for the week.

Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. and everyone is welcome.
