The top seeds held serve during Sept. 4 semifinal action in the Anna Maria Island Community Center NFL Flag Football League and will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, on the center field at 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria for the local Super Bowl contest.
Top seeded and still unbeaten Slim’s Place Seahawks earned a 26-19 victory over Beach to Bay Construction Broncos in the evening’s first semifinal matchup to advance to the final challenge. They got there behind an almost perfect performance from quarterback Don Purvis, who completed 25 of 27 passes for 244 yards and four touchdown passes.
Purvis’ favorite target was Andrew Turman, who finished with13 catches for 117 yards, including a pair of touchdowns and an extra point. Pat Calvary added five catches for 55 yards and one touchdown reception, while Jason Mickan completed the scoring with one touchdown catch and three catches on the day.
Turman and Calvary paced the Slim’s Place defensive effort in the victory with three flag pulls and an interception each.
Beach to Bay was led by three passing touchdowns from quarterback Rob Manderine, who finished with 153 passing yards and a strong all-around game from CJ Moore.
Moore caught five passes for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also completing two passes for 33 yards and rushing for 31 yards. For good measure, Moore also chipped in a game-high seven flag pulls on defense. KB Belton and Shiante Moore added four flag pulls each in the loss for Beach to Bay.
The second semifinal saw The Feast Redskins edge Jessie’s Island Store Dolphins 32-26 behind the strong all-around play of Ray Gardner, Josh Sato and Caleb Roberts, while Shay Coleman made the most of three catches, finishing with two touchdown catches and an extra-point reception.
Gardner threw for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown and had a touchdown reception, finishing with 103 all-purpose yards. Sato completed 11 of 15 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown pass, while adding a 23-yard touchdown reception. And Roberts completed three passes for 62 yards, while adding seven catches for 54 yards and an extra point.
Ryan Moss paced Jessie’s Island Store in the loss with 196 passing yards and four touchdown passes, including two long touchdown passes to Jonathan Moss, who finished with four catches for 93 yards and an extra point. Jeff Walker added five catches for 57 yards, including two touchdowns and an extra point. Walker also added a game-high six flag pulls, while Jonathan Moss and Chrissy McCracken finished with three pulls.
Key Royale golf news
The men of Key Royale Club got out on the links a few times during the past week, including twice on Sept. 1.
The morning saw the men play a nine-hole, low-net-of-partners match. Bill Shuman and Dennis Schavey dominated the field, carding a 15-under-par 49 for an 11-shot victory over second-place partners Vince Mercadante and Earl Huntzinger, who finished at 4-under-par 60.
Later in the day, the club held a Labor Day team scramble that saw Saul Ladd, Charlie Knopp, Vince Mercadante and Paul Phillips combine on a 2-under-par 30 to match the scorecard of Joyce Brown, Gary Razze and Janet Razze in a two-way tie for first place.
The women took the course Sept. 2 for a nine-hole, low-net golf match with a twist. They could choose only three clubs for the round.
Debbie Wohlers, Fran Barford and Joyce Brown all managed 2-under-par 30s to tie for first place. Wohlers birdied the sixth hole, while Janet Razze had a chip in on five.
Penny Williams put her tee shot on the eighth green 23 feet from the pin to win the women’s closest-to-the-pin contest. Tony Niewyk won the pin contest for the men when his tee shot wound up 8 feet from the pin on hole three.
Debbie Wohlers won the women’s longest-drive competition, while Charles Porter hit the longest drive among the men.
The men were back on the course Sept. 4 for a nine-hole, team scramble that saw Quentin Talbert, Art McMillan and Merritt Fineout combine on a 5-under-par 27 to take first place by one shot. The team of Gary Razze, Bill Lowman, Joe Muscatello and Tom Nelson finished alone in second at 28.
Horseshoe news
Hank Huyghe “walked” his way to the winner’s circle during Sept. 3 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. As the walker, Huyghe was the only player to earn a 3-0 record during pool play and was the day’s outright champ.
Sept. 6 horseshoe action saw two teams advance from pool play to the knockout round. Jerry Disbrow and Tim Sofran edged Sam Samuels and Steve Doyle 22-15 to earn bragging rights for the day.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warm ups begin at 8:45 a.m.
