Bears aerial assault keys Super Bowl victory
The Bears rode the passing and running of quarterback Gavin Johnston to a 40-28 victory over the Buccaneers to win the 8-10 division Super Bowl game.
The 8-10 Super Bowl jump started a full night of games March 13 at the Anna Maria Island Community Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Gavin Johnston ran for a pair of touchdowns while also completing seven of eight passes, including four touchdown passes. Billy Jackson was his favorite receiver, with five catches — including a pair of touchdowns and two two-point conversions. Dante Tilelli and Keira Johnston each added touchdown catches, while Nicholas Yoatros and Gavin Johnston paced the defense with an interception each in the victory.
Other members of the team include Charlie Faul, Brett Balais, Ian Leestma and Alayana Leestma.
The Buccaneers were led by quarterback Caleb O’Connor’s four touchdown passes, including two that went to Quinton O’Connor, who finished with five catches. Jeremiah Sculco and Ashton Hoy added touchdown receptions in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw the Buccaneers edge the Saints 31-25 to win the 11-13 Super Bowl behind the strong all-around play of Andrew Proctor. Proctor led all receivers with six catches, including three that went for touchdowns while also adding a game-high eight flag pulls on defense.
Dalton Guthrie completed eight out of 10 passes, including four touchdown passes, while Daniel Zoller had one touchdown reception and Andrew Zoller added an extra point. Tyler Brewer had a strong game on defense, finishing with five flag pulls and an interception he returned for a touchdown. Zoe Merrow rounds out the Buccaneer roster.
The Saints were led by quarterback Tuna McCracken, who completed seven out of eight passes, including three touchdown passes. Jackson Hayes added a touchdown pass and a touchdown reception. David Daigle, Morgan Horesh and Hannah McCracken each had one touchdown reception in the loss.
The last game of the evening saw the Eagles slip past the Redskins 32-27 to win the 14-17 division Super Bowl. Quarterback Jaret Rojas completed 11-15 passes, including three touchdown passes, to lead the Eagles, who also received a touchdown run, a touchdown reception and three flag pulls from Michael Latimer. Ryan and Dylan Doyle added touchdown catches, with Ryan also chipping in with an interception and two quarterback sacks on defense. Anthony Manino completed the scoring with a touchdown run and an extra point. Other members of the team include Evan Thompson, Edward Culinan and Steele Quinard.
The Redskins were led by Alex Martinez, who threw touchdown passes to Chris Johnson, Jacob Robertson and Corey Jacques.
Adult Super Bowl pairings set
The adult flag football league playoffs have whittled the field down to two teams in each age division, setting the stage for the 18 and over Super Bowl March 18 at 8 p.m. and the 30 and over Super Bowl March 19 at 8 p.m.
Slim’s Place Falcons flew past the Giants by a 40-24 score to open March 11 semifinal action in the 18 and over division. The second game of the evening saw the Saints pound Sato Real Estate Rams 31-16 to advance to the championship game.
The Raiders outscored the Packers 44-24 in the 30 and over semifinal game played March 12. The Chargers then steamrolled the Chiefs by a 36-14 margin in the second game of the evening.

Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club held its annual men’s scratch golf championship Feb. 25 and Feb. 27. The club changed the format to 36 holes of stroke play over two days.
Gary Risner defended his title from last year, finishing with a 3-over-par 131, eight strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Mark Mixon was alone in second place at 11-over par 139 and Tim Friessen took third place with a 16-over par 144.
The women of Key Royale set out to prove the old adage “drive for show, putt for dough” during their March 10 outing, and were awarded for low numbers of putts on their rounds.
Flight A winner was Pam Lowry with 12 putts and Laura Purcell, Liz Lang and Pam Alvord tied for second with 14 putts.
Carol Duncan and Meredith Slavin tied for first place in Flight B with 14 putts and Sue Christenson, Jan Jump and Joyce Brown each finished with 15 putts to finish in a tie for second.
Fourteen putts by Jan Turner was good enough for first place in Flight C, one putt better than Sally Martin, in second place.
Susan VanOrsdel had 14 putts to win Flight D and Eileen Witzgall came in second place with 15 putts.
In other action at KRC, Debi Wohlers recorded a pair of birdies and Judy Christenson had a chipin birdie. Jan Turner and Jan Jump also scored chipins.
Horseshoe news
Three teams emerged from pool play during March 14 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. Hank Huyghe and Rod Bussey drew the bye into the finals and watched as Sam Samuels and Bob Mason cruised past Bob Palmer and Tom Skoloda 24-9 to earn the second spot in the finals. Samuels and Skoloda stayed hot as they rolled past Huyghe and Bussey by a 24-12 score to earn the day’s bragging rights.
March 11 action saw two teams advance to the knockout stage. The team of Dom Livedoti and Rod Bussey rolled to a 22-10 victory over the team of Tim Sofran and Bob Rowley.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. and everyone is welcome.
