A plan is taking shape.
The Holmes Beach Traffic and Congestion Committee met April 4 at the direction of the city commission to tighten its permit-parking plan.
Commissioners asked the committee to provide a map of where the highest number of cars parked on streets in the city. The committee met to discuss the results.
City planner Bill Brisson also attended the meeting.
According to committee chair Jaynie Christensen, the plan has shifted from restricted street parking by zones to limiting parking based on proximity to the beach.
Nearly every street within walking distance of the beach falls into the parking-by-residential permit proposal. Beach end parking would be exempt.
The suggested “no parking” streets would begin at 27th Street and Gulf Drive, the southern most part of Holmes Beach, and stretch north to White Avenue at the northern city limit.
The areas west of the perimeter would require a residential permit to park on the streets or rights of way.
The dividing line follows Gulf Drive north from 27th Street to Marina Drive. Holmes Boulevard becomes the dividing line after the intersection of Gulf and Marina drives.
Holmes Boulevard terminates at 75th Street and Gulf Drive again becomes the perimeter until it reaches city limits.
Residents at the meeting requested 77th Street be included in the restricted zone. According to Christensen, under the proposal any street would be able to able to opt into the parking-by-permit plan.
Christensen said Brisson is drafting a map of the proposed restricted parking-permit area for commissioners.
The traffic committee meets next at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 14. They plan to present their new plan to the city commission at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 16 at city hall, 5801 Marina Drive.
“We’re tightening it up and giving them a plan B,” said Christensen. “I think everyone walked away feeling good.”
