Sports highlight: Center crowns adult league basketball champion
The Anna Maria Island Community Center’s adult basketball league came to a rousing season end June 30.
Second-seeded Team Mickan jumped out to an early lead over No. 1 seed Gator Man Pools and never trailed on the way to a 60-50 victory in the championship game.
Team Mickan was fueled by the hot shots from Jason Mickan, who knocked down four first-half 3-point baskets, and the strong inside scoring from Antwaun Jackson, who had 13 first-half points.
Gator Man Pools kept it close in the first half behind the inside presence of Dale Smith, who scored all 10 of his points in the first half, as well as the outside shooting of Brandon Osmond and Keith Wilking, who both knocked down a pair of first-half treys.
Both teams cooled off in the second half, but Team Mickan outscored the Gators 23-17 after intermission to cruise to a 10-point victory.
Jackson finished with a game-high 27 points, while Jason Mickan finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Cameron Kawcak added 13 points and eight rebounds in the victory. Other members of the team str Taj Green, Jon Moss, Pat Calvary, Ian Hambre and Alban Gega.
Aaron Dudukes led Gator Man Pools with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Smith finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Osmond’s 13 points and 8 points from Wilking completed the scoring for Gator Man Pools in the loss. Other members of the team include Qirtako Deruishi, Stephen Boyd and Erik Wiks.
Center to host 3-on-3 basketball tourney
The community center will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, July 25-26, in the gym.
Divisions will include ages 8-10, 11-13, 14-17 and 18 and older. Teams — a maximum of four players — can register for $100. All players receive a T-shirt and trophies will be awarded to division winners.

The center also will host a softball tournament for players 18 years and older Aug. 1-2 at Birdie Tebbetts Field, 5801 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach.

Soccer playoffs under way
Regular play for the adult soccer league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center is over and teams are in pursuit of the Island Cup. The game is set for 8 p.m. Thursday, July 16.
First-round action July 2 produced a couple of upsets starting with No. 5 seed Eason Builders earning a 3-0 shutout victory over fourth-seeded Smiledeep.
Scott Eason and Will Kretzman both contributed a goal and an assist while Omar Polar completed the scoring with one goal. Ray Gardner made 11 saves to complete the shutout victory.
No. 2 seed Sato Real Estate justified its seeding, but it wasn’t easy as they squeaked by No. 7 seed Wash Family Construction 2-1 in a penalty-kick shootout. Teddy Louloudes notched the lone goal during regulation for Sato, while Cory Wash scored the only goal for Wash in the loss.
The third match of the evening saw eighth-seed Slim’s Place knock out top-seeded 11 Man Gang 8-4 behind six goals and an assist from Eric Pullen and two goals from PJ Smarjisso.
Jeff Gonzalez led 11 Man Gang with two goals, while Lexi Braxton and Chris Yavalar added a goal each in the loss.
The last match of the night saw No. 3 seed LaPensee Plumbing roll to an 8-3 victory over No. 6 seed Rebellion. Holly Belton led the way with two goals and an assist, while Chris Circharo scored twice to lead LaPensee, which also received goals in the victory from Jeff Christenson, Ryan Hogan, Kim Christenson and Yuri Pereira.
Brett Laudicina scored two goals and Matt Plummer added one goal in the loss to lead Rebellion.
The action continues at 8 p.m. July 9 when Sato takes on LaPensee in the first semifinal match, after which Eason Builders will take on Slim’s Place at 9 p.m.
Key Royale golf news
In honor of America’s Fourth of July celebration, the women of Key Royale Club played a nine-hole match July 1, teeing off in a low-net-in-flight match from three red, three white and three blue tees.
In Flight A, Debi Wohlers birdied the first and ninth holes on the way to a 1-over-par 33, but it wasn’t enough for the prize, as Tootie Wagner fired a 4-under-par 28 to take first place.
Sue Wheeler carded a 5-under-par 27 to grab first place in Flight B. Sally Martin was alone in second after firing a 3-under-par 29, while Jana Samuels took third place with a 31.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play July 1 in horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits and were left to battle for the day’s bragging rights.
Walker Tim Sofran raced out to a 17-11 lead over the team of Dom Livedoti and Steve Doyle, but Livedoti and Doyle rallied by scoring 10 of the final 11 points to earn a 21-18 come-from-behind victory.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
