Playoffs start in basketball
Basketball playoffs began Nov. 17 for the adult basketball league at The Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
The action with No. 1 seed LaPensee Plumbing taking on No. 4 seed Miller Electric. Any hopes of a big upset by Miller Electric were quickly thwarted in the opening minutes of the game. Two 3-pointers by Jordan Demers and a 3-pointer and a fast-break basket by Shawn Hubbard keyed an 11-0 run to open the game for LaPensee Plumbing.
Kevin Roman momentarily stopped the bleeding with a rebound putback, but another 3-pointer from Demers and a nice pass by Hubbard to Brandon Osmond increased the LaPensee lead to 16-2 at the 14:19 mark in the first half. The rout was on.
LaPensse went on to an 85-50 blowout victory to advance to the finals at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24.
Demers led all scorers with 23 points, including five 3-pointers, while Mike Scpondra added 21 points for LaPensee in the victory. Hubbard added 11 points and Ryan Burke finished with 10 points for LaPensee.
Nick Hampton scored 16 points and Derrick Gargett added 12 points to lead Miller Electric, which also received nine points from Tyler Bekkerus in the loss.
The second playoff game of the evening saw No. 2 seed Gator Man Pools roll to a 57-45 victory to advance to the championship game over No. 3 seed West Coast Air Conditioning.
Aaron Dudukes scored 18 points and Chris Shaffer added 12 points to lead Gator Man, which also received nine points each from Dale Smith and Joe Combs in the victory.
Teagan Purtil’s 15 points and 13 points from Joe Bazzo paced West Coast Air Conditioning in the loss.
Quest for Island Cup on horizon
The regular season of the adult soccer league at the Anna Maria Island Community Center came to an end, finalizing the matchups for the playoffs, which gets started at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3.
Sato Real Estate finished as the top seed with a 7-0-1 record and will take on eighth seed Island Time. Island Pest Control finished with a 6-2 record to secure the second seed, earning them a matchup with seventh-seed Mason Martin. Progressive Cabinetry and Ross Built finished with matching 4-3-1 records, but Progressive gets the third seed on a tiebreaker, giving them a match against No. 6 seed Beach to Bay Construction. Ross Built will take on fifth-seed Slim’s Place.
Playoff action gets started Dec. 3 and continues until the final, the Island Cup match set for 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17.
The soccer action opened Nov. 19 with Sato Real Estate rolling to a 6-3 victory over Island Pest Control behind two goals each from Sean Flynn and BJ Grant. Matt Kretzman added another goal, while Drew Mitchell added one goal and three assists for Sato.
Adam Mott, Oliver Petereit and John Zamora scored one goal each to lead Island Pest Control in the loss.
Beach to Bay Construction obliterated Mason Martin on an 11-4 score in the second game of the evening behind three goals each from Kevin Roman and Shay Coleman, who also added two assists. Chrissy Rice, Olaf Kraus, Sean Edwards, Shawn Kaleta and Bing Robinson each added one goal for Beach to Bay.
Austin Wash and Colin Krozek led Mason Martin with two goals each in the loss.
Horseshoe news
Three teams emerged from pool play and advancd to the knockout stage during Nov. 18 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
Adin Shank and Jerry Disbrow drew the bye into the finals and watched as Tim Sofran and Norm Good rolled to a 21-5 victory over Bob Palmer and Jay Disbrow. Sofran and Good stayed hot in the finals, cruising to a 23-13 victory over Shank and Jerry Disbrow to earn the day’s bragging rights.
The team of Bob Palmer and Steve Doyle were the only team to compile a 3-0 pool-play record during Nov. 21 action and were the day’s outright champs.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the city pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
Sixty-one Key Royale Club women hit the course Nov. 17 to participate in the 1950s-60s themed Fall Doe Day. They played a nine-hole team scramble before adjourning to the clubhouse for a drive-in syle luncheon, complete with rootbeer floats.
The event, co-chaired by Kathy Miller and Eileen Witzgall, was deemed a rousing success and a good time for all.
The team of Roxanne Koche, Pam Lowry, Barb Harold and Karen Mitchell took first place, while the team of Brenda Solleveld, Carol Duncan, Heather Pritchard and Judy Ward finished in second place.
Tootie Wagner won the longest-drive competition, while Heather Pritchard took the prize for closest-to-the-line. Cate Foy won closest-to-the-pin, while Phyllis Roe won the putting contest.
The club men took on the course twice Nov. 16. The action started with a morning, nine-hole, low-net-of-partners match. The team of Stephen Gerrard and Hank Tremblay combined on a 5-under-par 59 to grab first place by one stroke over Dave Kruger and Jim Lathrop.
The afternoon round saw the men play a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match. Mike Gillie had the round of the day, posting a plus-5 to win the individual title with Gary Duncan in second place at plus-2.
Al Carr, Dale Hudson, Barry Izzard and Tom Nelson captured the team title with a combined score of plus-2.
The men were on the course again Nov. 19 for a nine hole, team scramble. The team of Barry Izzard, Tom Nelson and Larry Pippel combined on a 5-under-par 27 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day. The team of Pat Moyna, Rich Papini, Dan Richardson and Bill Schuman was alone in second place at 4-under par-28.
