Paul Kaemmerlen
Paul Kaemmerlen, 91, of Holmes Beach, died Dec. 12.
He attended high school in Hudson, New York, and spent a year at Dartmouth College before entering the U.S. Army. He was in the Battle of the Bulge, had five battle stars and was a true member of the Greatest Generation.
He graduated from Dartmouth, married and his passion for sports and the outdoors led him to become an innkeeper at Mount Snow, Vermont. He built, owned and ran three ski lodges.
He was a founding member of the West Dover Fire Department, a school director and a director of the former Vermont National Bank.
A memorial service will be held in Vermont at a later date.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Maryanne,; daughters Susan Jeffery of Canon City, Colorado, Robin May of Windham and Marlboro, Vermont, and Laurie Murdock and husband of Holmes Beach; a granddaughter; two grandsons; two great grandchildren; and sister Helen Lawrence of Park Forest, Illinois.
Dr. Colin Henri Gard ‘Digger’ Kendall
Dr. Colin Henri Gard “Digger” Kendall, 94, died Dec. 15.
He was born to British parents in 1921 in Queensland, Australia, and raised in Cuba. He attended high school in Austria and medical school in London. He met his wife playing tennis and they were married in London in 1949.
Dr. Kendall practiced medicine in three countries, including in pediatric practice in the Tampa area in the 1960s. He served as a lieutenant colonel at U.S. Air Force hospital in Suffolk, England, and worked in drug research in Princeton, New Jersey, before retiring to Anna Maria Island in 1995, where he enjoyed walking on the beaches and swimming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Until he was 90, he played tennis regularly with a group from The Center of Anna Maria Island.
An avid reader, he spoke and read five languages.
A funeral service was held Dec. 19at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in Holmes Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marjorie; sisters Noni Brill and Jean Simpson; children Colin Michael of West Midlands, England, Valerie Stern of New Jersey and Gillian of Holmes Beach; and grandchildren Kelly Armstrong, Lucy Riter, Chloe Kendall, Jack Kendall, Laurie Stern and Jenna Stern.
Scott Van Ostenbridge
Scott Van Ostenbridge, 57, lifelong native of Anna Maria Island, died Dec. 13.
