Two teams emerged from pool play with 3-0 records during Dec. 23 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. In a close 24-16 final, the team of Bob Palmer and Steve Doyle took out Bob Mason and Hank Huyghe to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Three teams advanced to the knockout stage during Dec. 26 action. Jim Kleiner drew the bye into the finals and watched as Dan Belden and Sam Samuels eliminated Bob Mason and Hank Huyghe 21-11 to advance to the championship match. It was all Kleiner in the finals, as he “walked” his way to a 21-8 victory over team Belden-Samuels.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The men of Key Royale Club played a pair of matches Dec. 21. The morning saw a nine-hole low-net-of-partners match, when Bill Shuman an Dennis Schavey matched the 4-under-par 60 carded by Fredy Meyer and Hank Tremblay to finish tied for first place.
The afternoon saw the men reconvene for a nine-hole modified-Stableford System or quota-points match. Rich Papini was on fire, carding a plus-9 for the best individual score on the day. Papini’s score helped teammates Peter Lund and Dan Richardson to a score of plus-7 and the team title.
The Key Royale women got out on the course Dec. 22 for their final round of golf for the year. They played a nine-hole individual-low-net match in four flights.
Phyllis Roe scorched the track with a 9-under-par 23, which gave her the round of the day and first place in Flight A. Lori Waggoner was alone in second with a 1-under-par 31, while Debi Wohlers birdied the ninth hole to finish in third place with a 35.
Debbie Milder and Meredith Slavin both carded 4-under-par 28s to share first place in Flight B, one shot ahead of Joyce Wagner in second place.
There was another tie in Flight C as Barb Estok and Sue Wheeler both finished at 3-under-par 29 to tie for first, while Fran Barford and Terry Westby tied for second with matching 1-under-par 31s.
Eileen Witzgail carded a 1-over-par 33 to take first by one stroke over Anne Klein and Janet Razze.
Flag football tryouts set
The Center of Anna Maria Island will hold tryouts for its adult flag football winter league at 7 pm. Monday, Jan. 4.
Games will be played Wednesdays starting Jan. 27.
League play is included in a center membership. The fee for non-members is $120.
