Center adult football completes 3rd week, kids go for 5
The adult flag football league at The Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, completed three weeks of action on the field, including four games played Feb. 10.
Coldwell Banker sits atop the standings with a 3-0 record, one game ahead of Moss Builders, which is alone in second with a 2-0 record. Beach House Restaurant follows with a 2-1 record with 1-1 Beach to Bay Construction their heels in fourth place. Mason Martin, Truly Nolen and Tyler’s Ice Cream complete the standings with matching 0-2 records.
The Beach House won its second game of the season by edging Mason Martin 26-20 to open Feb. 10 action behind 135 passing yards and four touchdown passes from Don Purvis. Mike Gillum was the leading receiver with 110 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Shawn Kaleta ran for 30 yards and had 20 receiving yards to go along with a touchdown and an extra point. Jesse Brisson completed the scoring for Beach House with a touchdown reception. Jon Moss paced the Beach House defense with six flag pulls, while Purvis finished with four pulls in the victory.
Jason Sato led Mason Martin with 190 passing yards and three touchdown passes, two of which went to Frank Agnelli, who finished with 105 receiving yards and an extra point. Josh Sato ran for 55 yards while also piling up 85 receiving yards with a touchdown and an extra point in the loss.
Coldwell Banker improved to 3-0 with a 39-6 blowout victory over Truly Nolen in the second game of the evening. Charles Buky completed 20-of-27 passes for 245 yards and six touchdown passes, three of which went to Scott Eliseo who finished with 130 receiving yards and an extra point. Lexi Braxton added 60 receiving yards, including a touchdown and two extra points. Robert Kasten and Jim Ptak both added touchdown receptions in the victory.
Matt Morgan threw for 40 yards, ran for 55 yards and finished with 35 receiving yards, while scoring the only touchdown for Truly Nolen in the lopsided loss.
Coldwell Banker earned its second victory of the evening when they cooled off Tyler’s Ice Cream by a 48-27 score behind huge games from Buky and Eliseo. Buky finished with seven touchdown passes and 235 passing yards, while Eliseo had six touchdown receptions, two extra points and 180 receiving yards. Lexi Braxton added three extra point receptions and Ptak finished with 30 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Shay Coleman threw for 100 yards and four touchdown passes to lead Tyler’s, which also received 60 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns from Ben Sato. John Coleman and Scott Rudacille each added a touchdown reception to complete the scoring in the loss.
Moss Builders tore down Beach to Bay Construction 41-7 behind a balanced offense that saw four different players score touchdowns. Nick Sato led the way way with a rushing and receiving touchdown to go along with two extra points. Sato finished with 95 rushing yards and 40 receiving yards. Quarterback Ryan Moss passed for 120 yards and four touchdown passes. Jordan Demers and Mike Powers both finished with a touchdown and extra-point receptions, while Ed Moss added 45 receciving yards and a touchdown reception in the victory.
Powers paced a strong defensive effort with three interceptions and three flag pulls.
Mike Shaugnessy was seven for seven for 95 yards and a touchdown pass, while also rushing for 30 yards to lead Beach to Bay in the loss. Caleb Roberts added 95 receiving yards, including a touchdown and an extra point.
Youth football news
The flag football league for young players in three divisions completed its fifth week of action and there’s still one team in each division chasing an unbeaten season.
LaPensee Plumbing sits atop the 8-10 division standings with a 5-0 record after defeating Miller Electric 27-18 Feb. 8. Beach Bums is right behind with a 4-1 record. The Bums edged Eason Builders 14-13, dropping them into a tie for seventh place on a 1-4 record. Bark & Company Realty was idle last week, but remains in third place with a 3-1 record, while Heidi Johnston ReMax improved to 3-2 with a 22-0 victory over winless AMI Vacation Rentals. Tyler’s Ice Cream also was off and remains in sixth place at 2-2.
Sugar Beach Digital improved to 5-0 and remained the team to beat in the 11-13 division after rolling to a 34-8 victory over Truly Nolen in the Feb. 9 action. The loss dropped Truly Nolen to 2-2 and fifth place in the standings. Second place in the division belongs to The Feast, which improved to 4-1 after doubling up on a 40-20 score against West Coast Air Conditioning. The loss drops WCAC to 1-4 and a tie for eighth place in the standings. LPAC improved to 3-1 after handing Air & Energy its first loss. The 13-12 victory Feast in a tie for third place.
The most exciting game of the night saw two winless teams in search of a first victory. Signarama improved to 1-3 after edging Progressive Cabinetry by a 39-38 score. The loss drops Progressive to 0-5 — last place in the division.
Team Mannino improved to 5-0 after cruising to a 55-24 victory over Team Snyder. The loss drops Team Snyder to 1-4 and a last place tie with Team Cuva, which was defeated 33-32 by LPAC. The win improves LPAC to 3-2 — good for second place in the standings.
Horseshoe news
Three teams emerged from pool play during Feb. 10 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Herb Puryear and Bob Palmer drew the bye into the finals and watched as Bob Lee and Rod Bussey destroyed Sam Samuels and Roger Nigg 22-3. Lee-Bussey followed their dominating performance with an even better one, shutting out Puryear-Palmer 22-0.
Two teams advanced to the knockout stage during Feb. 13 action. Palmer teamed up with Keith Erickson and they rolled to a 21-3 victory over Bob Rowley and Clark Bennet.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men played a pair of matches Feb. 8, starting with a morning better-ball-of-partners match. The team of Jim Auch and Chet Hutton combined on a 10-under-par 22 to lap the field. Bruce Allan and Tom Bode, Gino Di Clemente and Neil Hammer and Dan Hayes and Paul Proxy all finished in a tie for second place with matching 6-under-par 26s.
Later in the day, the men were out for a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match. Mike Brakefield carded a plus-5 for the best individual score, while Mike Gillie took second with a plus-3.
The men played a team scramble Feb. 11. The team of Bob Blazer, Al Carr, Jon Holcomb and Tom Nelson combined on a 5-under-par 27 for a one-shot victory over a pair of teams. Barry Anderson, Ron Buck, Gary Duncan and Jack Isherwood matched the 4-under-par 28 carded by John Cassese, Dale Hudson, Rich Papini and Mike Pritchard for a two-way tie for second place.
