Signarama outlasts Pink & Navy in youth soccer
As the youth soccer league moves into its fifth week, two things stand out. The 11-13 division has three evenly matched teams, while the 8-10 division has two dominant teams and three teams trying to hang on.
The Feast Restaurant sits atop the 8-10 standings with a 4-0 record, while Wash Family Construction is on their heels with a 4-1 record. John Damato P.A. is alone in third with a 1-2-1 record with Blue Lagoon Landscaping close behind at 0-2-1, followed by Lux Carts, which is still in search of its first victory.
The Feast demonstrated that despite the standings, they are the team to beat in the 8-10 division as they rolled to a 6-0 victory over Wash May 16. Anthony Nguyen and Jackson Kruse scored two goals each, while Juliet Greene and Elek Brisson each notched on goal in the victory.
Results for the May 17 8-10 division games were not provided by the center.
The 11-13 division is a portrait for parity, as only three points separates first from last place. Coldwell Banker is on top with a 2-1-2 record, ahead of second place Beach Bums’ 2-2-1 record. Sugar Beach Digital brings up the rear at 1-3-1, but only one victory from surging to the top of the standings.
Coldwell Banker opened 11-13 division action for the week with a 4-2 victory over Sugar Beach Digital behind a hat trick from Tyler Brewer and a single goal from Ava Zink. Nick Cavalluzzi notched 2 goals to lead Sugar Beach in the loss.
The final 11-13 division game May 18 is the Islander’s game of the week.
Beach Bums earned a 2-1 victory over Sugar Beach Digital that wasn’t as close as the score indicates. Beach Bums scored its first goal in the second minute of play when Sean Rodriguez threw the ball into Alex Winterhalter, who volleyed the ball past Sugar Beach goalie Tuna McCracken to make it 1-0.
Beach Bums proceded to dominate play for the next 15 minutes, but could not put another shot past McCracken and the Sugar Beach defense. Shortly after the first goal, Dalton Guthrie passed inside to Winterhalter, but McCracken came up with the save.
McCracken made another save two minutes later when Winterhalter fed Guthrie in front of the goal — only to be denied.
Beach Bums almost had a specatcular goal three minutes later when Rodriguez sent a free kick into the Sugar Beach goal area. With his back to the goal, Daniel Sentman flicked the service over his head, but McCracken was again there to deny the Bums a scoring opportunity.
Sugar Beach finally gained some traction in the waning moments of the first half when Nick Cavalluzzi and David Daigle worked a nice give-and-go up the right side. However, Cavalluzzi’s shot was blocked by Bum’s defender Bryce Higgins.
Sugar Beach got on the scoreboard early in the second half when Cavalluzzi and Daigle worked the ball up the left side. Daigle held the ball up before passing inside at the top of the box to Sam Waterman, who lofted the ball over Beach Bum goalie Javier Rivera to tie the score at 1-1.
The rest of the second half was a battle in the midfield with no clear-cut scoring chances until the 31st minute, when Sentman and Winterhalter worked a nice give-and-go that produced a strong shot from Winterhalter, but Morgan Horesh made a great save to deny it.
With the scoreboard clock stopped and the official time now in the referee’s hands, Beach Bums midfielder Sentman sent a long throw-in to Guthrie, who volleyed the ball into the goal for the game winner.
Sentman finished with a goal and an assist, while Rodriguez had one assist. Guthrie added the game winner. Rivera finished with 3 saves to complete the Beach Bums victory.
Waterman scored the lone goal for Sugar Beach on an assist from Daigle.
Adult soccer continues
The adult soccer league at the center completed its third week of action with four matches played May 19. Ross Built, had a bye while Eason Builders moved into a tie with Ross in the standings on the strength of a 7-1 victory over Slim’s Place, which fell to 2-1 on the season and into a fourway tie for second place.
Eason Builders received a hat trick from Anthony Barberio and 2 goals from Joey Ciasulo in the victory while Zach Shield scored the lone goal for Slim’s Place on an assist from Joanna Baugh.
Island Pest Control improved to 2-1 with a 5-2 victory over winless Blake Medical No. 2 behind two goals from Damir Glavan and single goals from Frank Agnelli, Shawn Kaleta and John Coleman. Michael Aston notched both goals for Blake in the loss.
Moss Builders also moved into a tie for second with a 9-2 victory over Blake Medical No. 1 behind four goals from Angela Wiles and two goals each from Bing Robinson and Olaf Krause. Ryan Besecu and Karyn Tietz scored a goal each to lead Blake in the loss.
Jiffy Lube moved into the conversation among teams in a second-place tie thanks to a 4-2 victory over winless Wash Family Construction behind two goals from BJ Grant and a goal each from Danny Anderson and Drew Mitchell. Andre Lewis and Murat Akay scored a goal each to lead WFC in the loss.
Youth baseball to begin
Holy cow, sports fans.
The Center of Anna Maria Island is hosting a youth baseball league this summer.
Registration is required by June 3 and can be completed online at centerami.org or the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Player evaluations will be:
• 6:30 p.m. June 7 for ages 5-7.
• 6:30 p.m. June 8 for ages 8-10.
• 6:30 p.m. June 9 for ages 11-13.
Members will pay a $5 processing fee.
The cost to non-members is $90.
A coaches and players clinic, led by Manatee High School baseball coach Rob Vierra and some of the high school players, will be June 8, June 15 and June 22.
The center is still seeking coaches and sponsors.

Horseshoe news
The team of Tom Skoloda and Tim Sofran were the only team to earn three victories during May 18 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria pits and were declared the day’s outright champions.
May 21 action at the City Hall park saw two teams emerge from pool play and battled it out for the day’s bragging rights. Steve Doyle and Sofran eased past Skoloda by a 22-16 score to earn a trip to the winner’s circle.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Key Royale golf news
Golf continues at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach with action throughout the week.
The men played two rounds May 16, starting with a better-ball-of-partners match won by the team of Jack Roe and Al Kaiser. They combined on an 8-under-par 24 to grab a one-shot victory over two teams. Hugh Holmes teamed up with Paul Proxy to match the 7-under-par 25 carded by Dave Kruger and Jim Lathrop to finish in a tie for second.
Later in the day, the men played nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match. Jack Lowry had the best individual score, carding a plus-5, while the team of Lex Halakan, Art McMillan, Earl Ritchiel and Quentin Talbert combined on a plus-9 to win the team competition.
The men were back on the course May 19 for a team scramble. The team of Mal Hughes, Tim Friessen, Pat Moyna and Earl Ritchie combined for first place on a 5-under-par 27 in a tie with Jack Connors, John Estok, Bob Leedham and Dan Richardson.
