Center adult basketball, soccer seasons head into playoffs
The regular season of the adult basketball league at the Center of Anna Maria Island has concluded with Team Jackson leading the way on a perfect 6-0 record, earning a first-round bye for the playoffs.
Team Sapanora earned second seed with a 4-2 record after getting a forfeit victory over No. 3 seed Team Calvary, which also has a 4-2 record. Team Aaron is set for fourth seed with a 3-3 record, while Team Bekkerus and Team Terman hold down fifth and sixth seeds with matching 2-4 records. Team Bailey wrapped up the seventh seed with an 0-6 record.
The playoffs will get started June 28 with Team Aaron taking on Team Bekkerus at 6:30 p.m., Team Calvary versus Team Terman at 7:30 p.m. and Team Bailey versus Team Sapanora at 8:30 p.m.
With the forfeit by Team Calvary during June 21 action, there were only two games played. The first game saw Team Aaron roll to a 59-39 victory over Team Terman behind 21 points from Paul Aaron. Dale Smith added 16 points for Team Aaron, which also received 12 points from Jim Lynch in the victory.
Andrew Terman scored 21 points to lead Team Terman as the only player in double figures in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Team Jackson roll to an 89-65 victory over Team Bekkerus behind a game-high 28 points from Antwan Jackson. Matthew Dwyer added 24 points for Team Jackson, which also received 22 points from Teagan Purtill and 15 points from Tanoan Alexandrea in the victory.
Neil Baumann paced Team Bekkerus with 25 points, while Tyler Bekkerus and Greg Winsper added 14 points each and Sam Hooker finished with 12 points in the loss.
Another playoff approaches: adult soccer
With one week left of the regular season in adult soccer, there is some fierce competition for the top seed and the easiest path to the finals. The top seed gets a first-round game against either 0-6-1 Blake Medical Center No. 1 or 1-5-1 Blake Medical Center No. 2 — both likely to wind up in the July 5 game.
Jiffy Lube currently resides in the top spot with a 6-1 record, but Slim’s Place at 6-2 and Wash Family Construction at 5-2 are on their heels. Eason Builders Group is alone in fourth place with a 4-2-1 record, while Ross Built holds down the No. 5 spot with a 3-3-1 record. The sixth and seventh spots in the standings are held by Moss Builders and Island Pest Control with matching 2-4-1 records.
Action on June 23 started with a 6-6 tie between Island Pest Control and Ross Built. Island Pest received a hat trick from Kevin Roman and single goals from Lexi Braxton, Shay Coleman and Frank Agnelli, who also contributed with five saves in goal.
Mike Vitori, with 2 goals and two assists and Matt Dwyer with 2 goals of his own, led the Ross Built offensive attack. Chris Circharo and Dr. Connor Bystrom scored a goal each and Richard Fosmore made seven saves to help preserve the tie.
Slim’s Place edged Blake No. 2 by a 3-2 score in the second match of the evening. James Lynch led Slim’s with 2 goals, while Darrin Wash added a goal. Will Case with six saves and an assist from Chris Culhane contributed to the victory.
Jermais Gramajo’s 2 goals and seven saves from Mario Primo paced Blake Medical in the loss.
Wash Family Construction rolled to a 10-1 blowout over Blake No. 1 behind 2 goals each from Rico Beissert, Steve Oelfke, Jennifer Sayko and the ageless Lyn Clark. Kyle Lessig and Murat Akay both added goals, while Beissert, Oelfke, Caitlin Lemmond and Lessig all contributed assists in the victory.
Aaron VanHook scored the lone goal on an assist from Chris Dzubian while John Darley made 11 saves in goal.
The last game of the evening saw Eason Builders Group and Moss Builders battle to a 4-4 tie. Nate Talucci and Austin Wash both had a goal and an assist to lead Eason Builders, which also received a goal each from Anthony Barberio and Shea Yates while Scott Rudacille finished with six saves between the pipes.
Aaron Parkin and Angela Wiles both had a goal and an assist to lead Moss Builders, which also received a goal each from Josh Sato and Bing Robinson in the tie.
Key Royale golf news
It was another busy week of summer golf at Key Royale Club. The men got out twice June 20, starting with a morning, nine-hole best-ball-of-partners match. The team of Dennis Schavey and Bill Shuman combined to card an 8-under-par 24, three shots ahead of second-place finishers Jim Thorton and Bob Dickinson at 5-under 27.
Later in the day, the men were out for a nine-hole, modified-Stableford System match. Tim Friessen led the pack with a plus-6, while Tom McDonnel and Ron Vandeman tied for second place at plus-4.
The women were on the course June 21 for a nine-hole individual-low-net match in two flights.
Fran Barford fired a 2-under-par 30 to grab a one-shot victory in Flight A. Phyllis Roe, Helen Pollock and Penny Williams all shot 1 under par to finish in a three-way tie for second.
Terry Westby carded the low round of the day with a 4-under-par 28 and first place in Flight B. Markie Ksiazek was alone in second with a 1-over-par 33.
The men played nine-hole scramble June 23 that resulted in clubhouse bragging rights for the team of Herb Clauhs, Tim Friessen, Jim MacVicar and Dick Mills at 4-under-par 28.
Horseshoe news
The team of Tim Sofran and Dom Livedoti dominated horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits last week. On June 22 and June 25, Sofran and Livedoti were the only team to earn the recquisite 3-0 pool-play record and were both day’s outright champions.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Registration ongoing for youth basketball
The center is accepting registrations for a youth basketball league. Interested players can register online at www.centerami.org or at the Center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Play begins Aug. 2. A $5 processing fee is required for center members. Non-members pay $90. The deadline to register is July 15.
Evaluations will be at 6:30 p.m. July 18 for players age 5-7, July 19 for 8-10 year olds, July 20 for players 11-13 and July 21 for players 14-17.
Scott Townsend, Bradenton Christian School varsity basketball coach and some of his players will be conducting a three-night player-coaches clinic at 6:30 p.m. July 18-20.
The center is seeking coaches and sponsors for the upcoming season of sports programs.
