Adult sports playoffs hit center boards, soccer field
The regular season of the adult basketball league at the Center of Anna Maria Island gave way to three playoff games June 28. Team Jackson earned a bye into the semifinals and watched to see which team they would play.
The night got started with No. 4 seed Team Aaron taking on No. 5 Team Bekkerus. Team Aaron started the game with a 9-1 scoring run before holding on for a 48-41 victory behind three players with double-figure scoring. Paul Aaron led the way with 14 points, while teammates Dale Smith and Jim Lynch added 12 and 11 points respectively.
Team Bekkerus was led by Neil Baumann, who scored a game-high 21 points. Jens Buff added 8 points in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw No. 3 seed Team Calvary roll to a 69-51 victory over sixth seed Team Terman behind a game-high 25 points from Pedro Vega. Teammates Reggie Clemmons and James Friedman added 17 points each in the victory.
Eric Gledhill’s 21 points and 20 points from Ray Gardner paced Team Terman in the loss.
The third and final game of the evening saw second seed Team Sapanora roll past Team Bailey by an 84-31 score behind double-figure scoring efforts from six players led by 21 points from Scott Elisio. Mike Sapanora finished with 18 points, while Joe Bazzo and Mark Bryan added 12 points each for Team Sapanora, which also received 11 points from Ryan Kraus and 10 points from Tom Heald in the victory.
Daniel Bailey scored 13 points and Jeff Marland added 11 points to carry Team Bailey in the loss.
Semifinal action was set to start at 7 p.m. July 5 after press time for The Islander. Team Aaron was to take on top-seed, undefeated Team Jackson. Team Sapanora versus Team Calvary was to follow at 8 p.m. at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Regular season ends for adult soccer
The regular season of the adult soccer league at the center came to a close June 30 with four matches.
Slim’s Place, Jiffy Lube and Wash Family Construction finished 6-2, but Slim’s got the top seed, ensuring an easier path to the finals. Jiffy Lube and Wash Family earned second and third seeds. Eason Builders Group and Ross Built both finished 4-3-1, and Eason took the fourth seed on a tiebreaker.
Island Pest Control got the sixth seed with a 3-4-1 record, while Moss Builders held down seventh seed with a 2-5-1 record. Blake Medical Center No. 1 and team No. 2 both finished at 1-6-1 and were set to face off July 5 — after press time — to determine which team will take on No. 1 seed Slim’s Place when playoff action kicks off July 7.
Blake Medical Center No. 1 earned its first victory of the season in the opening match June 30, defeating Eason Builders 2-1. Thomas Hall led the way with a goal and an assist, while Alyshia Barr added a goal. Chase Bennion chipped in with an assist and Chris Dzubian made 11 saves in goal.
Anthony Barberio notched the lone Eason Builders goal on an assist from Scott Eason, while David Greene put up seven saves in goal.
Island Pest Control earned a 4-1 victory over Jiffy Lube in the second match of the night behind a pair of goals from Lexi Braxton. Damir Glavan and Frank Agnelli each scored goals, while Kevin Roman and Oliver Peteriet added assists in the victory.
Drew Mitchell notched the lone goal for Jiffy Lube, while Shawn McCarthy had 13 saves in the loss.
The third match of the night saw Ross Built outscore Moss Builders 5-3 behind two goals each from Eric Pullen and Mike Vitori. Greg Ross added a goal and Richard Fosmore made 10 saves to preserve the victory.
Josh Sato and Bing Robinson each scored goals and Angela Wiles added an assist. Moss Builders goalie Ryan Moss made 10 saves in the loss.
Wash Family Construction drubbed Blake Medical Center No. 2 7-1 behind two goals each from Jennifer Sayko and Murat Akay. Kyle Lessig had a goal and two assists, as did James Clifford, who finished with a goal and an assist. Sean Flynn completed the scoring with a goal, and Jason Sato made six saves in goal.
Jermais Gramajo notched the lone goal on an assist from Justin Guitierrez, while Mario Primo made seven saves in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The men started out the week of golf at Key Royale Club June 27with a pair of nine-hole matches. They played an individual-low-net match in the morning, with Jim Auch carding the round of the day on a 7-under-par 25. Bob Dickinson was alone in second place with a 5-under 27.
Later in the day, the men played a modified-Stableford System match. The team of Chris Fuenfechilling, Mike Gillie and John Holcomb combined on a plus-4 to take first place for the day.
The club women played a nine-hole, individual-low-net match with a side game of total putts June 28. Lori Waggoner took first place in Flight A-B with a 3-under-par 29, two strokes ahead of Helen Pollock and Penny Williams.
Sue Wheeler fired the low-net round of the day, carding a 6-under-par 26 to grab first place in Flight C. Terry Westby, Janet Razze and Markie Ksiazek tied for second place at 2-under-par 30.
Wheeler also took the prize in the low-putts contest with 14 putts.
The men were back on the course June 30 for a nine-hole scramble. After a tiebreaker, the team of Tom McDonnell, Mark Kimball, Dan Richardson and Quentin Talbert took first place with a score of 4-under-par 28 over the team of Merritt Fineout, Art McMillan, John Purcell and Tom Nelson.
Horseshoe news
Three teams emerged from pool play with 3-0 records and were left to battle for the day’s supremacy during June 29 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
Walker Tim Sofran drew the lucky bye into the finals and watched as Steve Doyle and Dom Livedoti edged Neil Hennessey 21-20. The finals were all Doyle and Livedoti as the pair rolled to a 25-9 victory over Sofran behind four consecutive double-ringers from Livedoti.
Two teams advanced to the knockout stage during July 2 horseshoe action. Hennessey and Sofran defeated Livedoti and Roger Nigg by a 21-16 score to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits.
