Center sees action in adult flag football, youth basketball
Only two weeks into the adult flag football league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria, there’s one team that hasn’t lost a game and one team still in search of its first victory.
But the season is young.
Mason Martin sits atop the standings with a 2-0 record, while Blake Medical Center is on the bottom, sandwiching Beach House Real Estate, Coldwell Banker, Tyler’s Ice Cream, Anna Maria Crossfit, Moss Builders and Progressive Cabinetry, all sporting 1-1 records.
There’s still a ton of football to be played — so stay tuned for game results and standings.
Action Aug. 25 saw two close games, a shutout and a forfeit victory.
Coldwell Banker opened the night by defeating Anna Maria Crossfit 26-18 behind 235 passing yards and four touchdown passes from quarterback Charles Buky. His favorite receiver was Matthew Morgan, who finished with 130 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions. Mike Brusso added a 10-yard touchdown reception for Coldwell Banker in the victory, which also saw extra-point receptions from Robert Kaston and Taryn Morgan.
Anna Maria Crossfit was led by Danny Murphy, who threw for 35 yards and two touchdown passes, while also adding 60 rushing yards, 30 receiving yards and scoring a touchdown. Clay Spangler added 160 passing yards, including one for a touchdown, while Kate Serdy and Sean McCarthy both scored touchdowns to complete the Crossfit scoring in the loss.
Mason Martin edged Beach House Real Estate 20-14 in the second game of the evening behind the dynamic efforts of quarterback Ray Gardner. Gardner completed 12 of 17 passes for 160 yards and three touchdown passes, while also rushing for 90 yards and a 2-point conversion. Eric Gledhill finished with 55 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Zach Schield added a touchdown reception of his own to complete the scoring.
Don Purvis threw for 215 yards, including a pair of touchdown passes and two extra points to lead Beach House, which also received 100 receiving yards, a touchdown and an extra point from Jesse Griffin. Jon Moss finished with 70 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Jason Mickan added 45 receiving yards and an extra point in the loss.
Moss Builders rolled to a 20-0 victory over Blake Medical Center behind the play of quarterback Ryan Moss, who completed 13 of 18 passes for 235 yards, including three touchdown passes and a pair of extra points. Andrew Terman also had a strong game, finishing with 130 receiving yards, 35 rushing yards, a touchdown and an extra point. Mike Gillum finished with 30 receiving yards, 30 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Chad Woods added 75 yards and a touchdown.
Chase Bennion, with 100 passing yards and 45 rushing yards, paced Blake Medical Center, which also got 90 receiving yards from Chris McCorkle in the loss.
Sugar Beach surges in youth basketball
After three weeks of youth basketball action at the center, Sugar Beach Digital has established itself as the team to beat with a perfect 3-0 record fueled by Jack Proctor, arguably the league’s best player. Harry’s Grill follows with a 2-1 record as the Waterfront Restaurant at 1-2 and 0-3 Salty Printing completing the standings.
The top teams — Sugar Beach and Harry’s — squared off Aug. 23 in the night’s opener in the gym, but Harry’s Grill was without leading scorer Anthony Nguyen and it showed. Sugar Beach rolled to a 16-4 victory behind 10 points from Jack Proctor. Evie Baugher, Lilt Kawahata and Peyton Hovda added 2 points each in the victory for Sugar Beach.
Alex Cox and Kenneth Neiring led Harry’s Grill with 2 points each in the loss.
The second game of the evening saw Waterfront Restaurant edge Salty Printing 8-5 for its first victory of the season. Nick Yatros scored 8 points to lead the Waterfront to victory.
Ewan Cloutier and Jack McCarthy scored 2 points each to lead Salty Printing, which also received 1 point from Fiona McCarthy in the loss.

The center is accepting registrations for its LaPensee Plumbing Bowling Tournament Sept. 10 at AMF Lanes 4208 Cortez Road, Bradenton.
Cost for the tournament is $30 per player, which includes shoes and three games along with an evening of frivolity. Awards for high game, low game, high series and low series — yes, awards for losing — will be made at the lanes.
Pre-registration is required and the center also is looking for lane sponsors.
The center will be closing registration for its fall youth soccer league Sept. 9.
Prospective players can register online at Centerami.org or in person at the center.
The cost is $90 for non-members, while members pay a $5 processing fee. The league offers divisions for ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-17.
The seasons kicks off in early October and ends in early December.

Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club men got out on the golf course for a couple of rounds last week, starting with an Aug. 22 nine-hole modified-Stableford match. Bob O’Keefe lapped the field with a plus-6 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
The women took the course Aug. 23 for a nine-hole individual-low-net golf match in two flights.
Tootie Wagner carded a 4-under-par 28 to grab first place in Flight A by one stroke over Lori Waggoner, who had a birdie on the second hole and a chipin on the seventh hole.
Flight B saw Terry Westby and Joyce Lathrop finish in a tie for first place on 1-under-par 31s.
The men were back on the course Aug. 25 for a nine-hole team scramble. The team of Jim Auch, Paul Phillips, Gary Razze and Dan Richardson combined on a 4-under-par 28 to take first place.
Horseshoe news
There were no unbeaten teams in pool play during Aug. 24 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. There were, however, three teams that forged 2-1 records, left to battle for the day’s supremacy.
The team of Bob Heiger and Neil Hennessey drew the lucky bye into the finals and watched as Hank Huyghe and Norm Good took out Tom Sofran and Steve Doyle by a 21-5 score. But Huyghe and Good were too “good” in the finals, as they rolled to a 24-13 victory and a spot in the winner’s circle.
Aug. 27 action also produced three 2-1 records in pool play. Sofran and Gary Howcroft edged Huyghe and Doyle 21-19 to advance to the finals where they met Hennessey and Jay Disbrow. Sofran-Howcroft brought the heat, defeating Hennessey-Disbrow by a 23-14 score.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Registration taking place for LBK triathlon
The 2016 Longboat Key Triathlon benefiting the new Women’s Sports Museum will be Oct. 16.
The international distance triathlon consists of swimming a half mile, biking 20 miles and running 5 miles.
The Sprint Distance race consists of swimming a quarter mile, biking 10 miles and running 2.5 miles.
The international duathlon consists of running 2 miles, biking 20 miles and running 5 miles.
The sprint duathlon consists of running a mile, biking 10 miles and running another 2.5 miles.
The start time is 7:30 a.m.
