Threat of storms stifles most AMI sporting events
For the second time in the past month or so, a tropical weather system has wreaked havoc with the sports offerings on the island. Though our area dodged any real damage from the passage of Hurricane Hermine, Hurricane Matthew brought little more a breeze.
The county school district canceled classes Oct. 7 and the Center of Anna Maria Island followed suit.
Key Royale golf news
It also was a short week of golf at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach.
The men managed to get out for a nine-hole quota-points match Oct. 3. The duo of John Cassese and Fred Miller both carded plus-3 to finish in a tie for first place.
Horseshoe news
Dom “Dominator” Livedoti and Tom Skoloda posted the only 3-0 pool-play record on Oct. 5 and were the day’s outright champs during horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits.
Livedoti, a 1965 Olivet grad, coached the Olivet College football team in Olivet, Michigan, 1988-92, served as head coach at Wayne State University in Michigan for two years, then returned to coach the Olivet Comets prior to the 2005 campaign. He and wife Liz reside in Bradenton.
Three walkers advanced into the knockout stage during Oct. 8 horseshoe action to set up the first ever walker showdown. Tom Sofran rolled past Gary Howcroft 22-2 to advance to the finals against Livedoti.
Livedoti earned his nickname, taking out Sofran by a 22-7 score to hoist the championship trophy on a fourth consecutive win, his fifth title in six sessions.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
Center to offer youth wrestling
Wrestling is coming to the center for children ages 5-13 under the new Center Wrestling Club, with plans to travel and compete in weekend tournaments.
The season will start Nov. 9 and costs $5 for members and $90 for non-members. The last day to register is Oct. 28.

Adult soccer starting up
The adult coed soccer leauge is back and accepting registrations for the season that starts Nov. 3. Games will be played Thursday evenings and the last day to register is Oct. 14. Cost is $5 for members and $120 for non-members.
Player evaluations are scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, with a player draft to follow.
