The inaugural season of the Ugly Grouper cornhole league, culminated Nov. 1 at the restaurant, 5704 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach, with a season-ending tournament.
First place in the regular season went to Amateur Corn Stars players Abbot Heath and Adam Merritt, who didn’t lose a match until falling in the tournament to Captain Morgan Charters’ Greg Hermis and Mike Morgan.
Bag Em and Tag Em’s Paul Barnett and Jim Leary took second place in the regular season, while Captain Morgan Charters captured third-place during the regular season.
The restaurant wanted to thank all of the teams that participated in its cornhole league and remind players they can register now for the winter league, which will get started Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Center soccer takes center field
Coaches appear to have done a good job evaluating talent and picking players for their teams in the Center of Anna Maria Island youth soccer league draft, which was held prior to the season opening.
After six games, there are no unbeaten and no winless teams in either of the three age divisions in which official standings are kept.
The youngest age group keeps no scores or standings.
But the 6-7 standings are most competitive. The division has Air & Energy on top with a 4-2 record, closely followed by 3-3 Bin There Dumped That — alone in second place. Signarama is 2-3-1 at third place, just ahead of Blalock Walters at fourth place and 1-4-1.
Bins Be Clean sits atop the 8-10 standings with a 5-1 record, while Gulf-Bay Realty and Mason Martin Builders are tied for second with matching 3-3 records. Cloud Pest Control completes the 8-10 standings at 1-5.
The three-team 11-14 division has Planet Stone in first place on a 4-1 record, but Progressive Cabinetry is close behind at 2-2-2 and Tyler’s Ice Cream is only two wins away at 1-3-2.
The 11-14 division got in two matches Nov. 1, starting with a 3-3 tie for Progressive Cabinetry and Tyler’s Ice Cream. Nick DeWitt scored two goals and Tuna McCracken scored once to lead Progressive Cabinetry.
Tyler Brewer led Tyler’s with three goals, while Thomas Heckler had a strong game in goal, finishing with nine saves.
Planet Stone defeated Progressive Cabinetry 6-2 Nov. 2 behind two goals each from Nick Cavaluzzi and Jack Barnes. Bryce Higgins and Chris Snyder each added a goal to complete the scoring in the victory.
David Daigle and Nick DeWitt scored a goal each to lead Progressive Cabinetry in the loss.
Bins Be Clean opened the 8-10 division action Nov. 1 with a 3-0 victory over Cloud Pest Control. Riley Lawson scored all three goals, while Evan Talucci put up four saves in the shutout victory.
Connor Allen was strong in goal for Cloud Pest Control, finishing with six saves in the loss.
Mason Martin Builders earned a 5-3 victory over Gulf-Bay Realty in the second match of the evening. Jackson Pakbaz scored three goals and Mason Agnelli added two goals to lead Mason Martin to victory.
Gregory Jordan scored two goals and Jayden Sparks scored once to lead Gulf-Bay in the loss.
Close games are the norm in 6-7 division action based on games played Nov. 2.
Bin There Dumped That edged Signarama 2-0, receiving a goal each from Ewan Cloutier and Cale Rudacille. Asa Brisson kept the game close for Signarama with four saves in goal.
The second game of the evening saw Blalock Walters earn a 3-2 victory over A&E behind two goals from Ethan Guerrero and a goal from Savannah Coba.
Jack McCarthy and Gigi Greene scored a goal each to lead Air & Energy in the loss.
Games are played on two fields at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.
Adult basketball rolls on
Adult basketball wrapped up its third week of action Nov. 2 at the center with two games played. Beach to Bay Construction leads the standings with a 3-0 record, one game ahead of Harry’s Grill, which is alone in second place with a 2-1 record. Intechgrate Systems sits in third place at 1-1, while Blake Medical Center and Mike Walter & Associates are both 0-2.
Beach to Bay Construction improved to 3-0 thanks to an 81-19 thrashing of Blake Medical Center behind a balanced offense that saw five players score in double figures. Beach to Bay was led by 16 points from Scott Eliseo, while Matt Rossi added 15 points, Joe Bazzo 14 points, and Thomas Heald and Mike Saponara each scored 10 points in the victory.
Blake Medical Center received 9 points from Van Kinder and 4 points from Chris McCormick.
Teagan Purtil scored 21 points to lead Harry’s Grill to a 64-48 victory over Intechgrate Systems in the second game of the evening. John Davis added 15 points for Harry’s, which also received 13 points from Brandon Kern in the victory.
Ted Hurst led Intechgrate Systems with 18 points while Dean Foster, Craig McDonald and Todd McIntyre finished with 8 points each in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The Key Royale Club women played a nine-hole individual-low-net golf match Nov. 1 in four flights.
Pam Lowry fired a 4-under-par 28 to take first place in Flight A by four strokes over Judy Squir, who was alone in second place with an even-par 32.
Jana Samuels’ 2-under-par 30 gave her first place in Flight B. Sharon Tarras was a stroke back in second place, while Sue Christensen and Deb Richardson were tied for third at even-par 32.
Susan VanOrsdel carded a 2-under-par 30 to grab first place in Flight C by one stroke over Barb Harrold.
Laurie Hicks 1-under-par 31 gave her first place in Flight D by three strokes over Janet Razze and Penny Auch, who finished in a tie for second place.
Horseshoe news
Ten teams battled it out in pool play during Nov. 2 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Tom Skoloda and Steve Doyle were the only team that managed a 3-0 record and were the day’s outright champs.
Two teams emerged from pool play during Nov. 5 action and met in the finals. Bob Palmer walked his way to a 21-3 victory over Art Kingstad and Hank Huyghe to earn the day’s bragging rights.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by random team selection. There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
