Aggravated assault against a police officer with a firearm is the newest charge levied against the Holmes Beach man who allegedly threatened his parents and held them under gunpoint in their Key Royale home.
At an Oct. 13 hearing, 12th Circuit Judge Susan Maulucci set an Apri1 3, 2017, two-week trial period.
The first-degree felony charge — as well as a third-degree aggravated assault with a firearm charge for threatening his parents — were filed in September against 31-year-old Gerald Alois Harles II, whose mother, Judy Harles, filed a waiver of prosecution.
Harles’ attorney Peter Lombardo set 25 depositions, including with five Holmes Beach officers, for Oct. 24, according to court records.
911 calls from Judy and Gerald Harles in the early morning hours of May 31 prompted law enforcement to respond in the 500 block of 68th Street with more than 40 units.
During the calls, the parents told the 911 dispatcher their son was tearing apart the house and they’d been threatened by him.
When HBPD officers arrived at the front door and spoke to Judy Harles, the police report states law enforcement observed her son approach from behind her with what appeared to be a shotgun or rifle.
Harles cocked the gun as he came to the door, as if he was preparing to fire it, according to HBPD reports.
HBPD Sgt. Kevin Powers and other officers took cover behind their patrol vehicles.
The mother and father emerged unharmed at about 6 a.m., after a standoff lasting more than an hour. Their son surrendered and was arrested when he emerged at about 10 a.m.
After the incident, Lombardo’s office issued a statement saying Harles was sorry and asleep during much of the standoff.
Harles’ next court date is a docket sounding at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at the Manatee County Judicial Center, 1051 Manatee Ave. W., Bradenton
