The dress rehearsal that is the regular season has come to a close in the youth soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island. Division teams battled it out in the past week for the most favorable playoff path to the league championship.
This is most evident in the 11-14 division, where top-seed Planet Stone has earned a bye into the championship game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. No. 2 seed Progressive Cabinetry and third-seed Tyler’s Ice Cream, who twice battled to ties, will face off in a semifinal game at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, with the winner taking on Planet Stone for the title.
The four-team 8-10 division saw Bins Be Clean earn the top seed via a tiebreaker over Mason Martin and matching 5-3-1 records. The third and fourth seeds are Gulf-Bay Realty and Cloud Pest Control, which also had matching records of 3-5-1. Bin Be Clean will take on Cloud in the first division semifinal at 6 p.m. Nov. 28, while Mason Martin is set to take on Gulf-Bay in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. The winners will square off for the championship at 6 p.m. Nov. 29.
The 6-7 division has no playoffs. But the champ or champs is determined by the season standings. Air & Energy and Signarama both compiled 4-3-1 records and finished in a tie for the championship. Bin There Dumped That finished second place with a 3-3-2 record, while Blalock Walters finished third with a 1-5-2 record.
Signarama climbed into a tie for first place thanks to a 1-0 victory over A&E in the final game of the regular season Nov. 14. Bert Vortuba scored the game’s only goal to lift Signarama to the victory. Other members of the co-champions are Colin Bankert, Reeshema Barnes, Asa Brisson, Anthony Dunfee, Leo Foster and Conor Samblis.
Members of the A&E co-champs are Caroline Wettstein, ViVi Dupre, Bam Gartman, Gigi Greene, Jack McCarthy, Jordan Moore and Charlie Rogers.
Adult basketball news
The adult basketball league completed its fourth week of action in the center gym with two games Nov. 15. Beach to Bay Consruction sits atop the standings with a 4-0 record, closely followed by Harry’s Grill at 3-1. Blake Medical Center at 2-2, Intechgrate Systems at 1-3 and 0-4 Mike Walter & Associates.
Blake opened the Nov. 15 action with a 74-40 victory over Mike Walter & Associates behind a game-high 24 points from Brandon Beserva and 10 points from Louis Flores. Chris McCormick added 9 points and Chris Hall and Van Kinder finished with 7 points each in the victory.
Nick Evangelista scored 16 points and Ian Hardy added 11 points to lead Walter & Associates in the loss.
Beach to Bay remained undefeated on a 57-43 win over Intechgrate Systems 57-43 in the second game of the evening behind a balanced scoring attack that saw all eight players score.
Mark Bryan scored 15 points and Matt Rossi tallied 10 points to lead Beach to Bay, which also received 9 points from Jerry Szklarek and 7 points each from Scott Eliseo and Thomas Heald in the victory.
Aaron Dudukes scored 15 points to lead Intechgrate, which also received 12 points from Ted Hurst and 10 points from Doug Bidwell in the loss.
Adults kick in the grass
Adult soccer on the center field completed its third week of action and four matches Nov. 17.
Mason Martin Builders currently holds the top spot in the standings with a 3-0 record, closely followed by Ross Built at 2-0-1. Jiffy Lube is in third place at 2-1 with Anna Maria CrossFit and Eason Builders Group holding fourth and fifth place with matching 1-1-1 records. Acqua Aveda and Wash Family Construction follow with 1-2 records, while Slim’s Place brings up the rear at 0-3.
Eason Builders and Mason Martin battled to a 6-6 tie in the first of the night’s four matches. Matt Plummer led Eason with three goals and an assist, while Scott Eason, Omar Polar and John Coleman scored one goal each.
Ted Hurst and Lexi Braxton scored two goals each to lead Mason Martin, which also gained a goal and an assist from Tara Stutts and a goal from Frank Agnelli.
Jiffy Lube slipped one over Slim’s Place 5-4 behind two goals from Murat Akay and a goal each from Danny Anderson, Vince Circharo and Shawn Kaleta.
Cole Peterson scored a pair of goals to lead Slim’s, which also received a goal each from Chris Klotz and Mike Brusso in the loss.
Wash hammered out a 7-3 victory over CrossFit. Matt Kretzman, Damir Glavan and Alf Klotz led Wash with two goals each. Unfortunately, one of Klotz’ goals was an own goal — a point for the other team. Chelsea Hoffner added a goal and an assist to complete the scoring for Wash Family Construction.
Will Kretzman and Ryan Moss scored a goal each to lead CrossFit, which also received six saves from Moss in the loss.
Ross Built cruised past Acqua Aveda 6-2 behind three goals from Kevin Roman and two goals from Connor Bystrom. Chris Circharo completed the scoring with one goal, while Max Gazzo finished with five saves between the pipes.
Nathan Kragt and Ray Gardner led Acqua Aveda with a goal each and Will Case made six saves in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
The men played a nine-hole modified Stableford-system match during golf action Nov. 14 at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach. The trio of Tom McDonnell, Tom Nelson and Quentin Talbert all carded plus-3s to tie for first place.
Talbert’s score helped his team of Marty Hicks, Lex Halakan and Art McMillan to the team title with a combined score of plus-1.
The men were back on the course Nov. 17 for a nine-hole scramble and again there was a three-way tie for first place. The team of Bob Blazer, Art McMillan, Bill Schuman and Herb Claus along with the team of Jon Holcomb, Bob Soos, Bob O’Keefe and Ron Vandeman matched the score of 2-under-par 30 carded by Gary Razze, John Purcell and Jim Menzies, allowing them to share clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
Horseshoe news
Two teams emerged from pool play during Nov. 16 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits. The team of Art Kingstad and Norm Good edged the team of John Crawford and Dom Livedoti by a 22-19 score to win the day.
Three teams advanced to the knockout stage during Nov. 19 action. The team of Bob Palmer and Kingstad drew the bye and watched as Bob Mason and Livedoti rolled past Bob Lee and Sam Samuels 25-6. Mason and Livedoti stayed hot, cruising past Palmer and Kingstad by a 21-9 score for the day’s championship.

The Center of Anna Maria Island is registering players for its Winter Youth Football League.
Player evaluation will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12 for children in the 5-7 age group, 7 p.m. Dec. 12 for children in the 8-10 age group, 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 for children in the 11-3 age group and 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14 for children 14-17 years old.
Play will begin Jan. 3.
The center also is seeking coaches and sponsors.
The cost is $5 for center members, $120 for non-members.
The registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 9.
