An eight-month extension may be on the way for the Holmes Beach formula business moratorium.
The moratorium was enacted Sept. 27 with a unanimous commission vote to block new formula or chain businesses within the city until mid-February 2017. It was designed to give city leaders time to consider how or if regulations for chain stores are needed in the city.
Under the moratorium, no formula business can receive a business tax receipt or building permit.
During the Dec. 7 planning commission meeting, city planner Bill Brisson presented commissioners with an ordinance extending the moratorium until Oct. 31, 2017.
Holmes Beach Mayor Bob Johnson, present at the planning commission meeting, said the extension is to allow city staff time to research the issue and for the commission to enact legislation.
Scott Boyd, a member of the city planning commission, asked Johnson if the extension would give city commissioners enough time to complete their work.
“I don’t think I’d approve another extension,” Boyd said.
Johnson assured commissioners the new deadline would provide sufficient time for the city to take action.
“There’s nothing wrong with a second time around,” planning commissioner Chuck Stealey said.
The commission voted unanimously that the moratorium extension is consistent with the comprehensive plan. The ordinance will move to city commissioners for consideration.
The planning commission will next meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at city hall, 5801 Marina Drive.
