Child struck by vehicle, flown to hospital

A 9-year-old boy was flown to a hospital by a BayFlight medical helicopter Nov. 22 after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Gulf Drive and Palm Avenue in Anna Maria.

The child was conscious at the scene, but had abrasions all over his body and a large bruise on his forehead, triggering state trauma protocol that he be airlifted for medical treatment, West Manatee Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jay Johnson said Nov. 23.

The 911 call was received at 8:44 p.m. Nov. 22, Johnson said.

Johnson did not have information regarding the vehicle that struck the child or where the child was taken for treatment.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating but did not return a call to The Islander by press time Nov. 23.
