Members tee up daily on the par-28 course at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach.
But Feb. 27 saw the team of Betsy Meyer and Bill MacMillan crowned mixed couple’s champion following play. Twenty-one teams participated in four matches each to determine the winner.
Helen and Al Pollock came in behind Meyer and MacMillan in second, while two teams, Pam and Gary Alvord and Monica and Eric Lawson finished in a tie for third.
Libations, snacks and stories followed on the clubhouse patio and a good time was had by all, according to club member Tom Nelson, who provides club news to The Islander.
March opened with the women joining the men for their regular modified-Stableford System match.
Ken Nagengast, Larry Solberg and Quentin Talbert all carded plus-5s to finish tied for first place. Nagengast played on the winning team with Mike Clements, Wayne Patterson and Gary Risner for a plus-7 and the prize in the team competition.
The women then had the course all to themselves March 2 for a nine-hole individual-low-net match in three flights.
Helen Pollock fired a 2-under-par 30 to outlast Sue Wheeler and Marcia Friessen, who were both a stroke back in second. The round also saw Friessen make a run at the top with consecutive birdies on the number two and three holes.
Carol Patterson carded a 4-under-par 28 to earn a two-shot victory in Flight B. Susan VanOrsdale was alone in second at 2-under-par 30, while Judy Todd and Mary Lou Dreier were another shot back in a tie for third.
Lisa Edmonds fired the low-net round of the day with a 5-under-par 27 to take first place in Flight C. Anne Klein took second with a 3-under-par 29, while Jane Perkins finished with a 2-under-par 30 for third in the flight.
Matchups set in adult flag football playoffs
Ugly Grouper secured the No. 1 seed and the safest path to the championship game, as the team remains in search of perfection. They boast a 7-0 record going into the “second season” of the Center of Anna Maria Island adult flag football league.
They will match up against winless Salty Printing while No. 2 Beach Bums takes on No. 7 Sandbar Restaurant. Solid Rock Construction held the No. 3 seed, earning a match against No. 6 seed Mi-Box, while Moss Builders takes on No. 5 Slim’s Place in the last of the quarterfinal games — all set for March 11.
Action March 4 kicked off with Ugly Grouper cruising past Sandbar Restaurant by a 48-21 score behind a huge game from Brandon Kull. Kull threw for five touchdowns, ran for one and added a receiving touchdown and an extra point. Octavious Cole and Jaret Rojas had a pair of touchdown catches, while Rojas also added a touchdown pass and a quarterback sack for a safety. Melissa Acevedo completed the scoring for Ugly Grouper with a touchdown grab.
Sandbar was led by Matteo Ferris, who threw three touchdown passes, including two to Tyler Brewer and one to Tuna McCracken. Karri Stephens completed the scoring with a 2-point conversion in the loss.
Beach Bums demolished Solid Rock Construction 27-7 behind three touchdown passes from Matt Briley to Anthony Mannino. Briley added a pick-six and Donnie Dietch had an extra point and a 2-point conversion in the victory.
Quarterback Jon Moss connected with Evelyn Long for the lone Solid Rock TD.
Moss Builders defeated Salty Printing 47-20 behind the play of Ryan Moss, who finished with four TD passes and a rushing TD. Moss also connected with Cole Carter and Greg Moss for a pair of TDs, while also throwing one to Zach Routh, who also threw for a touchdown and ran for another score.
Salty Printing received three touchdown passes from Tim Shaughnessy to Lane Burnett, Jesse Kunc and Bri Roberts in the loss.
The last game of the evening saw Slim’s Place slip past Mi-Box 33-29 to move up to fifth seed. JB Shuck threw four touchdown passes and caught one from Wade Carter. Jacob Robertson led the way with two touchdown catches, while Tim Holly and JJ Friszman each finished with a touchdown.
Dominick Otteni passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Mi-Box, which also received a pair of touchdown passes from Matthew Manger. Luis Caro Cruz led the team with five catches, including two for touchdowns, and Chad Woods finished with a touchdown in the loss.
Seedings set in adult soccer league
Burton Brick & Tile and Sato Real Estate finished with 5-0-2 records and tied 2-2 in their week-three matchup, but Burton Brick & Tile got the No. 1 seed on a tiebreaker. Sato Real Estate settles for No. 2 seed in the upcoming playoffs in the center’s adult soccer league. No. 3 seed Allied was on their heels with a 5-1-1 record, so the odds are good that the champion crowned at the conclusion of the playoffs will be one of these three competitors.
The remaining seeds drop off, with Servis First Bank and Blalock Walters earning the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds on matching 3-4 records. The Gitt Team finished 2-5 and lands at No. 6, just ahead of No. 7 Jiffy Lube, which finished 1-5-1. Slim’s Place kept a stranglehold on the No. 8 spot with an 0-5-2 record.
Week seven action kicked off March 3 with Allied cruising to a 6-1 victory over Servis behind four goals from Zach Reda and a goal each from Raul Loria and Cody Wright. Steve Oelfke made seven saves to help preserve the victory.
Sean Gray scored the lone goal for Servis, which received five saves from Andrew Sullivan in the loss.
Blalock Walters blasted Slim’s Place 8-2 in the second match of the evening, posting two goals each from Kali Richardson, Chris Scott and Matt Staggs. Nate Welch and Nick Bouchard both added goals and Kevin Mulcahy finished with seven saves in the victory.
Hyun Kim and David Greene scored a goal each to lead Slim’s Place, which also received eight saves from Mark Long in the loss.
Burton Brick & Tile doubled up on The Gitt Team 6-3 in the third match of the night. Zach Lieb led the way with two goals and an assist. Kris Yavalar, Chris Klotz, Katie Christianson and Jonathan Aragon each scored goals, while Klotz and Aragon combined to make 13 saves in the victory.
Will Romberger, Jamie Hutchinson and Tanner Zelmar each scored goals to lead Gitt, which received five saves from Neil Fellowes in the loss.
Sato eased past Jiffy Lube 4-1 in the last game of the night behind two goals from Race Arande and a goal each from Will Kretzman and Damir Glavan. Mark Rudacille nailed down the victory with eight saves in goal.
Danny Anderson scored the lone goal on an assist from Gerardo Urbiola while Ryan Moss made 13 saves in the loss.
Playoff action kicks off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, on the center pitch.

The Anna Maria Island pitchers squared off March 1 against Trailer Estates for the second time this year. The Jan. 25 matchup was all square until the AMI pitchers prevailed in the final two matches to win the competition by a 13-11 score.
This time around for the friendly rivalry, the island pitchers took control early and cruised to a 17-7 victory.
Regular action at the Anna Maria pits March 3 saw three teams advance to the knockout stage with Bob Heiger and Tom Skoloda earning the bye into the finals. Bob Rowley walked into the finals with a 21-15 win over Adin Shank and Jerry Disbrow. Rowley then slipped past Heiger-Skoloda 21-20 to earn the day’s championship.
The March 6 games saw two teams advance to the playoffs, where the team of Tom Farrington and Norm Langeland defeated Team Bob — Rowley and Mason — 23-20 to earn a trip to the winner’s circle.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
