Manatee County Sheriff’s Deputy Jared Leggett received the MCSO’s 2023 Deputy of the Year award Dec. 8 from Sheriff Rick Wells.
Leggett was awarded for his efforts in saving the life of Sgt. Brett Getman, who had a heart attack Dec. 19, 2022, at the MCSO-Anna Maria substation.
Leggett — a former volunteer firefighter/paramedic and emergency medical technician — called for emergency medical services, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and applied an AED, or automated external defibrillator, to resuscitate Getman.
Holmes Beach Police Sgt. Thomas Fraser responded to Leggett’s urgent call for help until EMS arrived and took over treatment.
MCSO’s news release about the award stated that the emergency medical technicians and staff at HCA Florida Blake Hospital in Bradenton “determined that if not for Deputy Leggett’s and Sgt. Fraser’s quick actions, the incident would have ended tragically.”
