Bradenton Beach police officers observed a southbound white sport-utility vehicle traveling erratically at high speeds on Gulf Drive about 2:49 p.m. March 3 before the motorist crashed on Longboat Key.
Responders said a medical issue may have been a factor and the motorist was not cited.
Officers were responding to a minor crash in the 1600 block of Gulf Drive South in Bradenton Beach and observed an SUV traveling southbound, passing several vehicles in the center lane at an estimated 80 mph, according to a police report.
Officer Eric Hill attempted to catch up to the motorist.
After crossing the bridge onto Longboat Key, Hill observed skid marks, damaged signs and a debris trail in the 7100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive. He then located the SUV on its left side against a stand of trees.
Longboat Key Fire Department crews removed an 80-year-old driver from the wreckage and the man was transported to HCA Florida Blake Hospital in Bradenton with injuries.
LBK police reported the vehicle struck an electrical box before overturning, temporarily knocking out power to several homes on the north end of Longboat Key.
