Spring break leaves only golf, horseshoes on sports desk
Little takes place at the Anna Maria Island Community Center sports hub while public schools are on spring break.
But the Key Royale Club women teed off for a low-gross, low-net golf match in several flights March 31.
Low gross winner in Flight A was Phyllis Roe, who carded a 5-over-par 37 to edge Debi Wohlers by two strokes. Marcia Helgeson’s 42 put her in first place in Flight B, while second-place finisher Fran Barford carded a 45. Terry Westby’s 46 was good for first in Flight C, followed by Penny Auch with a 48.Willa Barkley carded a 49 to grab first in Flight D, while Eileen Witzgall followed with a 55.
Pam Alvord fired a 5-under-par 27 to win low-net honors in Flight A, one shot ahead of Pam Lowry and Sue Lowry in a tie for second. Sue Christenson’s 3-under-par 29 to grab first place in Flight B, while Meredith Slavin and Mari Scholz tied for second with matching 2-under-par 30s. Jan Turner carded a 5-under-par 27 to earn a six-shot margin of victory in Flight C over Joyce Lathrop. Kathy Miller’s 1-over-par 34 earned first place in Flight D.
Willa Barclay, Mary Lou Dreier and Ann Hitchen had chipins on the day.
Horseshoe action April 1 and April 4 at the Anna Maria City Hall horseshoe pits produced two outright winners.
The April 1 champs were Hank Huyghe and Tim Sofran on the only 3-0 pool-play record.
The team of Karl Thomas and Sam Samuels earned the day’s bragging rights April 4 after fashioning the only undefeated pool play record.
Play gets underway at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and Saturday at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m. and everyone is welcome.
