The Center of Anna Maria Island’s 3-v-3 basketball league ended June 26 with semifinal and championship games.
Slim’s Place earned its spot in the finals with a 22-9, 19-21, 21-16 victory thanks to 23 points from Corey Jaques and 22 points from Jacob Munoz. Michael Lidge chipped in 17 in Slim’s victory.
Kevin Roman scored 25 points and Wes Jackson added 16 points for Luxury Services in the loss.
The second semifinal match saw Solid Rock Construction defeat Slicker’s Eatery 17-21, 22-12, 21-11. Zack Long scored 23 points to lead Solid Rock, which also received 18 points from Ray Gardner and 16 from Mark Long.
Zack Price scored 27 points and Cam Moore added 11 points in the loss for Slicker’s Eatery.
The championship saw Solid Rock defeat Slim’s 21-14, 15-21, 21-14 to take the crown. Zack Long again led Solid Rock with 25 points, while Ray Gardner added 17. Mark Long chipped in 8 points and Karri Stephens finished with 6 points for Solid Rock.
Michael Lidge paced Slim’s with 21 points, while Corey Jaques and Jacob Munoz both finished with 13 points in the loss.
Center kicks off Indoor soccer
Soccer enthusiasts are beating the summer heat in the center’s indoor soccer league, which boasts four teams in each age division competing in the gym. The divisions are 3-4, 5-7, 8-10 and 11-14 ages with the 3-4 and 5-7s noncompetitive — no scores. The 8-10 and 11-14 divisions will maintain scores and standings.
The regular season for the 8-10s runs until July 15, with championship night set for July 22. The 11-14 regular season runs until July 14, with championship night July 21.
Action June 24 kicked off with Revive Nutrition and Moss Builders battling to a 4-4 tie. Parker Svoboda paced Revive Nutrition with two goals and an assist, while Jackson Griffin added a goal, an assist and five saves in goal. Conley Paul added a goal and Karver Klodnicki finished with seven saves.
Alex Benitez led Moss Builders with three goals and Mason Gazzo added a goal and an assist. Titus Moss and Grady Niedzwick combined to make 13 saves in the tie.
The second match of the night saw a forfeit for Diamond Turf after Mi-Box lacked players.
Action June 23 for the 11-14a saw Westfall’s Lawn Care edge Poppo’s Taqueria 4-3 behind two goals each from Ashton Bennett and Callin Westfall. Mylo Lee added an assist to go along with seven saves, while Asher Patel finished with 10 saves in the victory.
Chandler McRae led Poppo’s with two goals, while Maggie Niedzwick added an assist. Parker Svoboda — playing in two divisions — and Gunnar Maize combined to make 12 saves in the loss.
The second game of the night saw AMI Outfitters cruise to a 4-2 victory over Jiffy Lube. Grayson Cohen and Koen Klodnicki scored two goals each to lead AMI Outfitters, which also received a combined 20 saves from Colten DeBerry and Jordan Tobey in the victory.
Hudson West paced Jiffy Lube with two goals, while Tucker McRae, Italia Nappo and Aiden Kester combined to make 22 saves in the loss.
Key Royale golf news
Golf action at Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach got started with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford system match June 23. Ken Nagengast grabbed clubhouse bragging rights after carding a plus-2 to earn a 1-point victory over Joe Coyne, Chuck Patrick and Earl Ritchie, who all tied for second at plus-1.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match June 24. Sue Wheeler fired a 1-over-33 to take first place by a stroke over Jana Samuels, who was alone in second place.
Members played a nine-hole scramble with all attempted putts counted in tabulating a team’s final score. The team of Chuck Patrick, Charlie Porter and Terry Schaefer combined on a 5-over-par 37 to win the day’s proceedings.
Horseshoes action
Two teams emerged from pool play during the June 25 horseshoe competition at the Anna Maria City Hall pits and settled things in a playoff. The team of Tom Farrington and Bob Hawks cruised to a 26-8 victory over Tim Sofran.
Farrington stayed perfect for the week after posting the only 3-0 record in pool play during the June 28 games.
The action gets started at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
