Pandy G. Swamy of Holmes Beach died Oct. 21 at Tidewell Hospice Home. He was born on June 9, 1935, in Ajjampur, India, to a family in the lowest social class, the untouchables.
In telling his own story, he often said he went from a known destiny to an unknown destiny. When the English left India in 1947, the new government focused efforts on this majority group that had been offered no education or opportunity. Pandurangappa Govindaswamy was educated through such scholarship programs and medicine was the career goal selected by his father.
It was in the Mysore Medical College that the young doctor learned a back up financial plan for his future: playing cards. His skill and luck helped others from his community too. Decades later, his new father-in-law would teasingly say he lost his daughter in a game of poker.
Dr. Swamy passed the medical boards in India and focused on anesthesia, completing his internship and residency in Winnipeg, Canada. In 1967, he joined the Marshfield Clinic in central Wisconsin, joining the staff of St. Joseph Hospital.
In 1969, he completed a fellowship in neonatal anesthesia, a specialty that he loved until his retirement in 1991. Throughout his working years, he financially supported the maintenance and education of his extended Indian family. He established a middle school for girls in his village in honor of his father.
After a stroke in 1999, he and his wife moved to a family home on Anna Maria Island. He continued his interest in cards with local friends and neighbors and loved meeting new people. He offered a perspective on life that most people remember long after he met them.
A celebration of life will be held later.
Memorial donations can be directed to the donor’s favorite charity.
Dr. Swamy is survived by wife Mary Pat, children Krishna and (Cheryl) in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and Tara Swamy Allen (Jimmy) in Frisco, Texas; grandchildren Mariah, Lila and Bryce Allen.
In India, he has family includes a brother and three sisters, nieces and nephews.
