Danny continues to weaken

Tropical Storm Danny continued to weaken as it neared the Leeward Islands early Aug. 24, according to the National Weather Service in Miami.

The storm, located about 60 miles east-northeast of Dominica early Aug. 24, was expected to weaken to a tropical depression. The storm was moving west at about 9 mph with winds near 40 mph.

Danny was expected to move over the southern Leeward Islands Aug. 24 and then into the northeaster Caribbean sea.

Expected to become little more than a “remnant low” by Aug. 25, Danny was the first hurricane of the 2015 Atlantic storm season, peaking as a category 3 with winds up to 115 mph mid-day Aug. 21.

The storm was expected to bring much-needed rain to drought stricken Puerto Rico.
