There was a full slate of sporting activities the week of July 21-27 with youth soccer and adult football in the gym and on the field at the community center to go along with adult horseshoe and golf action.
The summer indoor soccer league at the Center of Anna Maria Island came to an end with semifinal and championship matches July 21-22.
The 11-14 division semifinals kicked off July 21 with Poppo’s Taqueria getting a free pass into the championship match when Jiffy Lube lacked the players to field a team.
Westfall’s Lawn Care & Pest Control and AMI Outfitters played to a 4-4 tie in regulation in the second game of the night. Callin Westfall scored a pair of goals and Kalen Holt and Mylo Lee each added one goal. Kyle Castagna helped keep Westfall in the game with 20 saves.
Wes Saxon scored all four goals for AMI Outfitters, which also received two assists from Koen Klodnicki and 20 saves from Jordan Tobey in the tie.
The game went to a penalty-kick shootout that saw Holt, Lee and Castagna make their spot kicks for Westfall while Saxon and Klodnicki converted for AMI Outfitters, giving Westfall the victory.
The 11-14 championship match was a nailbiter that saw both goalies come through with saves to keep their teams in the game. Castagna made 17 saves for Westfall while Chasem Weber made 19 saves for Poppo’s. Cohen Weber got the game winner in what turned out to be a 1-0 victory for Poppos.
The 8-10 division semifinals kicked off July 22 with Mi-Box taking on Diamond Turf. Leo Burns scored six goals, while Jordyn Autry added an assist to lead Mi-Box to a 6-1 victory. Everett Hood helped preserve the victory with 12 saves.
Parker Svoboda notched the lone goal for Revive Nutrition, which also saw eight saves from Ari Batten in the loss.
The second match of the night saw Diamond Turf and Moss Builders battle to a 3-3 tie in regulation. Rafael Price scored two goals and added an assist, while Ruthie Ball finished with one goal. Goalies Lucas Urbiola and Beauen Kolb combined to make 14 saves in the tie.
Jensen Hay scored three goals to lead Moss Builders in the tie.
In the penalty-kick shootout, Alex Benitez and Hay made their spot kicks while only Price was able to convert for Diamond Turf giving Moss the victory.
The championship match again saw Leo Burns put his Mi-Box team on his back in leading them to a 5-3 victory over Moss Builders. Burns scored all five goals while Everett Hood made 14 saves in the victory.
Jensen Hay scored two goals for Moss Builders, which also received a goal from Nathan Moss and 20 saves from Titus Moss in the loss.
Adult flag football continues
After five weeks of action in the adult flag football league at the center, Slim’s Place and Solid Rock Construction are on top of the standings with matching 4-0 records.
Salty Printing is right behind in second at 4-1, while Solid Rock Electrical and Bubble Binz follow with 3-1 records. Coaster Continent at 3-2, Cortez Pump & Sprinkler at 2-3 and Moss Builders at 1-3 follow, while Edible Cookie Dough Cafe, G.I. Bins and Reel Coastal Properties are all still in search of team wins.
Action July 24 got started with Bubble Binz cruising to a 34-13 victory over Moss Builders, followed by Solid Rock Electrical outscoring Cortez Pump & Sprinkler 46-26. Salty Printing kept Reel Coastal Properties winless with a 37-20 victory, while Slim’s Place earned an easy 36-7 victory over Edible Cookie Dough Cafe.
The game of the week, however, was Solid Rock Construction’s 44-32 victory over Coaster Continent. Tuna McCracken had a huge game for Solid Rock, throwing four touchdown passes, running for three scores and adding a team-high five flag pulls on defense. Blake Balais and Raul Loera both finished with two TD catches in the victory.
Matt Manger threw five TD passes to lead Coaster Continent, which also received two TD catches each from Steven Pavina and Karri Stephens. Olvin Izquierdo added a TD reception and Pavina finished with a game-high eight flag pulls in the loss.
Key Royale news
Golf action at the Key Royale Club in Holmes Beach got started July 21 with the men’s weekly modified-Stableford system match. Jim Bailey took first place with a score of plus-3, two points ahead of Mike Clements.
The women played a nine-hole individual-low-net match July 22. Helen Pollock took first place, just ahead of Jana Samuels. Terry Westby and Anne Klein came in third and fourth place, respectively.
Members played a nine-hole, two-person scramble on July 24. Mike Clements and Mike Cusato combined to fire a 1-over-par 33 to earn clubhouse bragging rights for the day.
Horseshoes action
Tim Sofran walked his way to the day’s championship during July 23 horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Sofran held on for a 21-16 victory over Bob Hawks and Tom Betty to earn the day’s bragging rights.
The July 26 games saw Gersey Fernandes team up with Gary Howcroft to post the lone 3-0 record in pool play and were the outright champs.
The action gets started at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Anna Maria City Hall pits. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.
There is no charge to play and everyone is welcome.
