Adult football winding down, plus golf at KRC, AM horseshoes

With only two weeks left in the regular season of the adult flag football league at the Center of Anna Maria Island, Luxury Services and The Fish Guy Aquarium Services are 6-1, with a comfortable lead over the rest of the pack.

Fishing with Salty and Salty Printing are tied for third with 4-3 records, while Solid Rock Construction is right behind with a 3-3 record and a game in hand.

Moss Builders and Moss Air are 3-4 in a battle for the sixth seed, while 2-4 Pavina Bros. Window Cleaning, 2-5 USA Fence and 1-6 MI-Box complete the standings.

Action Aug. 13 kicked off with Fish Guy edging Solid Rock Construction 18-13 behind a big game from Tim Holly. Holly led all players with 11 catches, including two for touchdowns, while adding five flag pulls and two interceptions on defense. Miguel Rodriguez finished with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run in the victory.

Luxury Services cruised to a 33-7 rout over Moss Air behind five TD passes and a defensive TD from Chase Richardson. Connor Morse and Karri Stephens each finished with two TD grabs, while Nic Pelagio added a TD in the victory.

Jonathan Moss threw a TD to Rex Kesten and an extra-point pass to Logan Heath for Moss in the loss.

The third game saw USA Fence earn a victory by forfeit over Fishing with Salty after Salty was unable to field a team.

Ryan Moss threw five TD passes to help Moss Builders hold on for a 35-33 victory over Pavina Bros Window Cleaning in the fourth game. Moss connected with Audrey Guess and Christian Hampton for two TD catches each, with Hampton also adding an interception of an extra point that he took to the house for another TD. James Roadman completed the scoring in the victory with a TD and an extra point.

Steven Pavina ran for two scores and added a TD catch and Dallas Buchholtz threw three TD passes for Pavina Bros. in the loss. Christian McPherson chipped in with a TD reception and three extra points.

The last game of the evening saw Salty Printing outscore MI-Box 41-28 behind four TD passes and two TD runs from Tuna McCracken. Tyler Brewer led all players with 12 receptions, including two for touchdowns, while Emily Bekkerus added two TD catches in the win.

Donte Filletti threw four touchdown passes, including two to Alex Zettler to lead MI-Box, which also received TD catches from Jaden Grant and Jessica Kelly in the loss.

 

Playoffs set in 5-v-5 adult soccer

After seven weeks of regular-season action, the 5-v-5 adult soccer league playoff matchups are set for Aug. 19 at the center, 407 Magnolia Ave., Anna Maria.

Sato held onto No. 1 with a 6-1 record and will take on No. 8 Leading Edge Investments, 0-7, at 6 p.m.

The 7 p.m. match has No. 3 seed 82 West Home Inspections taking on No. 6 Salty Printing. No. 2 Solid Rock Construction is matched up against No. 7 USA Fence at 8 p.m., while No. 4 Hampton Painting will battle No. 5 Moss Builders at 9 p.m.

 

Key Royale golf news

Following a wet week, the weather got back to August’s stifling heat and there was a full week of golf at the Key Royale Club, 700 Key Royale Drive, Holmes Beach.

The men kicked things off Aug. 10 with a weekly mixed Stableford/skins game. Matt White took first in the Stableford match with a plus-2. Mike Cusato, Tom Nelson, Bill Shuman and Quentin Talbert tied for second at plus-1. White also won a skin on the second hole, while Nelson captured one on the sixth hole.

The women played a nine-hole individual low-score match Aug. 11 that saw Jana Samuels take first place with a 42. Terry Westby finished in second with a 56 and Anne Klein was alone in third with a 59. Klein also chipped in on the second and ninth holes.

Members played a mixed scramble Aug. 13 to close out the week. The team of Janelle Clements, Tom Nelson and Quentin Talbert matched the even-par 32 carded by Mike Clements, Ken Nagengast and Jana Samuels to finish in a tie for first place.

 

Horseshoe news

Two teams emerged from pool play Aug. 12 with 3-0 records and settled things in a playoff during horseshoe action at the Anna Maria City Hall pits.

Tom Farrington threw back-to-back double ringers to jump out to a 12-0 lead on the way to a 23-2 victory over Tim Sofran and Gersey Fernandes.

Farrington was back in the mix during the Aug. 15 games, this time teaming up with Steve Augustine to post the only 3-0 record in pool play, making them the outright champs.

Play gets underway at 9 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays at Anna Maria City Hall, 10005 Gulf Drive. Warmups begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by random team selection.

Play is free and all are welcome.

 

Register to bowl

Registration is open for the annual Greg LaPensee Bowling Tournament at Bowlero Bradenton, 4208 Cortez Road. The Sept. 12 tourney costs $350 for a lane with up to six bowlers.

Other entry options include a Signature Lane for $750, which comes with a custom metal koozie, community center fishing shirt, a logo displayed on the lane and at check-in, along with social media recognition on the center Facebook and Instagram pages.

The Lane Sponsor for $500 provides a logo displayed on the sponsor’s lane and at check-in.

Businesses and individuals can sponsor a lane for $275 without bowling.

Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m., bowling goes 6-8 p.m., with awards and raffle drawings following.
